Yaz had never been with a women before. It was a common thing for people to assume someone was straight, Yaz had always been presented as such. Not to mention her religion played into the stereotype. She'd never limited her sexuality or even specified it to anyone, because family and friends always just assumed she was straight.

That's why taking the Doctor to her family's for dinner after they started dating was so nerve racking.

She wasn't embarrassed to admit she was dating the doctor, god no, She wanted to shout it from the rooftops. She'd been dreaming of this moment since she set eyes on the timelord, her messy blonde hair, her gorgeous eyes, her goofy smile that could light up a room. She was perfect, and Yaz was so glad to call her her own. But, she couldn't say she wasn't nervous to say something about it. Not because of who the doctor was, because she was a she.

"Can't we just take the Tardis? It'd be so much quicker!" The doctor asked, facing her reflection in the mirror as she straightened her bow tie. Yaz sighed from her spot on the bed, running the hairbrush through her hair and pulling it into a ponytail. "It would, but I want to introduce you in the most normal way possible." Yaz made her way behind the doctor, wrapping her arms around her waste and pulling her into herself. "Good luck with that, I'm not what a lot of people would consider normal." The doctor giggled, placing her hands over Yazs.

"They'll love you, my family, they might be a little on-your-case at first but, you'll be a hit." The doctor smiled at her girlfriend. She wouldn't admit it to Yaz, but she was just as nervous. She'd been dreading meeting her mum again after the first time, since now it'd be as a girlfriend rather than a friend. It was going to involve tough conversations and explanations, and who wouldn't be nervous about that. But she loved Yaz, so she was willing to sit through it for her.

She took a deep breath and finished buttoning her shirt, tucking it in to her high wasted trousers and dusting off the creases from where Yaz's hands had been placed. Yaz couldn't help but smile fondly, she was beautiful. She ran a hand through the back of her hair, placing a kiss on the back of her neck as she did. "Ready?" She asked, earning a little nod. "As I'll ever be."

The taxi arrived at Yaz's house, on time perfectly. The doctor bounced her leg subconsciously against the car floor, locking her fingers with Yaz's in an attempt to calm her nerves. Yaz squeezed her hand gently and kissed it. "Doctor you'll be fine, I know it. Don't worry." Even those calming words from the woman she loved couldn't settle the doctor. Yaz lent her head on her shoulder as the taxi pulled to a complete stop. "Don't think about my parents, just think of the food. My family are great cooks, they always go all out for dinners. You can't eat for days after one supper there!" She laughed.

She looked up. "You hungry?" She asked playfully, poking her side. The doctor's stomach gave a grow as if to answer the question, making the blonde's face go red. "Yeah yeah, I'm exited to meet your fam. I'm just scared they'll, you know- not like me." She but her lip and looked out the car window. Yaz rubbed small circles on the doctors hand. "They will, I promise. I've already said I'm bringing my girlfriend to dinner, and they were just as exited to meet you whether you were a man or women." The doctor felt her nerves settle a little at the words.

The two ladies got out of the taxi and approached the house hand in hand. There was already a heap of voices inside, and a delicious smell seeping through the door that the doctor had to stop herself from smelling. Yaz knocked on the door and it was quickly answered by her mum. Here we go, thought the doctor.

Yaz's mum looked at Yaz with a wide smile, kissing her face lovingly before looking at the doctor. The doctor could've sworn she'd seen her smile widen, her face full of joy as they met eyes. Yaz's mum took her shoulders and kissed her face just as she did Yaz, and hugged her before letting go. "You must be Yaz's girlfriend! We've heard so much about you! Come in, both of you!" The doctor was almost startled by the warm welcome, but felt her mood chirp right back up as she walked into the house. Yaz sighed in relief as she felt the doctor relax and her confidence soon follow.

They entered the living room where Yaz's sister and brother both sat chatting. "Hi you lot!" The doctor greeted with her usual bubble, still hand in hand with Yaz. The two Khans stood up quickly and rushed to greet the two, kissing and welcoming Yaz home and hugging and handshaking with the doctor. Everything was so comfortable, even Yaz's dad didn't seem to complain that the doctor was a women.

"So, what did you say your name was?" Yaz's mum asked. They'd all settled into chairs with cups of tea whilst they waited for dinner. The doctor swallowed her mouthful of (rather nice) tea quickly. "The doctor." She answered with a smile. Yaz's mum nodded. "And how long have you two been together?" She asked sweetly. "Coming up to a month." Yaz said, squeezing her loves hand. The family nodded, but it was obvious Yaz's sister had something to say. "So how long have you known you liked girls?" She asked, mostly to Yaz as she could tell.

She gulped. In truth she never really had liked girls before the doctor, maybe this was just a one off or, she really was gay. "I don't actually know- in all honesty." She answered as quickly as possible. Yaz's sister nodded at the doctor as if to ask her the same question. "Oh I've always liked women, never been with a man. It'd be weird since I was-" she stopped herself, knowing Yaz wouldn't like the whole 'i was a man' story being told right now. The family chuckled.

Dinner was set out and they all gathered around to eat. They said prayed before eating, and dinner began. The doctor never could've guessed how nice the food would be, it was the nicest she'd ever eaten. As the evening drew to a close and the doctor and Yaz's taxi pulled up outside, Yaz's mum pulled her daughter aside from her girlfriend and whispered to her. "Keep this one." She giggled, placing a kiss on her forehead and rushing away to kiss the doctor goodbye as well. Yaz could've cried.

The doctor lent her head on Yaz's shoulder, nursing her stomach which she had definitely overworked tonight. "That went great." Yaz said, mostly to herself. "You think? Did they like me?" The doctor asked, looking up at Yaz. Yaz responded by kissing her lips, basking in the softness of them. "They loved you, Thanks for coming." The two smiled at each other lovingly. It was always worth the nervousness to find out someone accepts you the way they should, and Yaz was sure she had the greatest family in the whole wide world.
