To let you down

Yaz's POV-

I was breathing heavy, struggling to exhale through my nose due to the cold. My feet hurt more and more each time they hit the ground, the thud they made echoing in my ears each time. I could feel the sweat forming on my forehead, how long had we been running? The world around us was dark, but I could make out the sea on my left, and a block of unfinished buildings on my right. Though I didn't suppose it mattered, we were still running.

"Doc? Can we stop?" I heard Graham yell from behind me. The doctor, who was a while ahead of me despite my efforts to keep up with her, finally slowed to a halt, leaning over and panting as she waited for the rest of us to catch up. I looked at the group stood in front of me. We were all red in the face and breathing like we'd carried a racehorse over the finish line.

On our latest adventure, the doctor had encountered a specie of extremely dangerous alien parasite that'd found its way onto earth, and once the 'mother', as she called it, arrived and ordered a retreat the doctor insisted they follow it. We'd been running for ages in the same direction, with no way of telling where we were or where we were heading. But the doctor wanted to keep going, because 'we can't let the aliens win'. Though no one said it, we all knew the aliens had gotten away- who knows how long ago.

"So, where are we now?" Ryan huffed, leaning his hands on his hips as he caught his breath back. I looked at Graham, who shrugged his shoulders half heartedly whilst lent on his knees, nodding his head towards the doctor to his left. I turned to her, but she looked stressed and annoyed, as well as being as tired as the rest of us. Deciding to work it out for myself rather than pull at teeth (metaphorically), I pulled out my phone and checked the time. 10:45- and god knows where. I sighed loudly, making Ryan look up at me.

He rose his eyebrows as if to ask what I found, and I showed him my phone and the time. His face said it all. "We've been running for 3 hours, 3 hours and 15 minutes if you wanna get technical, and we still have no clue where we are." I felt myself getting angry, but calmed down. I looked about again, but caught the doctor's eye as I did.

I wasn't annoyed with her, I wasn't annoyed with anyone, I just wanted to know where we were so we could get home. I pulled up Google maps and entered my home address, groaning after the long blue line that appeared with the directions formed- it was a very long line. I put my phone away and decided to take charge, as no one else seemed to have a clue what to do. "I suggest we find a hotel or B and B, just for tonight. We can regroup in the morning." I stated, earning nods from Graham and Ryan. I looked at the doctor, she looked just as moody. Did she not like my plan?

"Doctor?" I asked, making her turn and look at me. "That sound good to you?" I clarified, but she looked less than pleased. "I think we should keep following my sonic, it's still got a trace of the parasite, I'm sure we can still find them!" She sounded so hopeful, and I hated to crush her like I was about to. But the stitch in my side was convincing me otherwise.

I shook my head slightly, giving her an apologetic look. "Come on Doc, it's late! Look around you! We need to rest, we can pick this up in the morning." Graham huffed. I could tell he was annoyed, at who or what I was unsure. "I think that's the right plan." Ryan added, shifting closer to me to avoid the inevitable fight that was about to break out. The doctor looked hurt, but nodded slowly and pushed her sonic into her pocket. Well that was easy.

We found a local B and B and checked in, the only room available being a 2 roomed sweet with 3 beds, 2 singles and a double. I'd agreed to share with the doctor, guiltily because of my growing feelings towards her, but mostly so Ryan and Graham wouldn't have to share. I hadn't stopped to think about the doctor's foul mood, which was everlasting apparently. It was already late when we checked it, but it was even later when we could all hit the hay. No one said a word when we got in, just muttered a goodnight and headed their ways.

I took the bathroom and washed my face, since I knew everyone else would go straight to sleep, and took off my jacket. I snuck back into the room with my and the doctors bed in it, Incase she was asleep already, and crawled under the sheets. I hummed as I fully relaxed into the comfort of the cool fresh covers, but couldn't help feel uneasy with the doctor next to me. Not like I didn't like her being there, I wished she was closer, but I knew she was bothered about something and I had to know what.

I didn't want to disturb her if she was sleeping, or if she didn't want to talk- she'd probably wake up more reasonable anyway- but something about how little she'd said since the argument, how tired she looked, how- "Yaz?"

I looked up and found the doctor lent on her elbows looking at me. Her eyes looked gorgeous in the dim moonlight, shimmering and glistening against the pale white. Her hair was messy from where she'd lent on it, and her shirt was pulled further over one shoulder than the other. She truly did look stunning, even in this state. "You alright?" I asked, sitting up. "You, looked quite upset earlier." The doctor sighed and looked away for a moment, only to look back.

"I didn't, let you down did I?" She asked. Her voice was barley more than a whisper, but her words hit me like she was shouting. I lowered my eyebrows and shook my head slowly. "By loosing the aliens? I didn't disappoint you lot?" She asked again, her tone seeming pleading. Did she really think we were disappointed with her? "Course you didn't, why would you have?" I laughed a bit to lighten the mood, but it was clear she was being serious. She was paranoid.

"I keep doing this Yaz, getting too exited with something and forgetting I have you lot who have to follow me. I keep failing, and you have to deal with it with me. I just don't want you to hate me, I don't want to let you all down." She looked down at her hands with closed eyes. I shuffled closer to her and pulled her head closer to mine. "Doctor, I promise you, you could never let us down. This is just a bump in the road, we can fix it. Together." I felt her smile under my hand.

Our foreheads lent together naturally, and I found myself parting my lips in habit. I quickly tried to correct my mistake, but to my surprise the doctor closed the gap with a kiss. I had to adapt to what was going on, but quickly melted into her soft lips against mine. She pulled away grinning. "Yasmin Khan, what would I do without you?" I smiled and blushed at her words. Good things always came of the doctors bad moods, but never anything this good.

I knew we would sort this problem out, because the team had each other, and I had the doctor. We could never disappoint each other, we just make life more interesting.
