6| You, Juliet, Are Not a Life-Sucker
ONCE we skipped out on bowling, Maverick drove us back to campus and the entire time, I explained to him the problem with affiliating with Theodore Montgomery. The main point being that even despite my parents constant saying ("The family business gets passed down to the first born son"), I wanted to eventually be the one to take over my family's company. And if I ever wanted to be able to do that, there's no way I could have any sort of relationship with Theo, not even friendly. Nothing. Nada. No talking, no crossing paths, absolutely nothing.
Maverick understood, since his family was similar to my own with their psychiatric jobs and business. He understood and since his family knew mine, it made more sense. It felt weird to tell him everything, though. I had never had a friend to confide in before and it felt so surreal that I had only met Maverick the other day, yet he already talked and treated me like one would to a friend.
He understood that the feud between my family and Theo's was intense and had stretched on for decades. Really, it was nothing to be messed with.
It was for the best, anyway. If I really did want to convince my family some day that I should be the one to run the family business, I needed to focus fully on my studies. I needed to focus on getting my business degree and proving to my parents that I was the best option (since Will was disinterested fully). Upon coming to college, I knew that I didn't want to lose my focus on school, especially because of a boy who seemed so determined to flirt with me and was simultaneously a part of the wrong family.
So I wrote off Theodore Montgomery III; If anything, I would just steer clear of his sorority and from him as whole. Besides, there were so many classes and majors and minors and shit that it was hard to have classes with friends and it was especially hard to continue running into the same person.
Except for today, running into a certain Theo seemed probably.
It was now Wednesday. Today for rush week, every fraternity and sorority was having a barbecue around campus. The bigger greek life organizations were once again on the quad, meaning Alpha Chi as well as Lambda Xi. I had seen Maverick walk up to the Lambda Xi group on the other side and he waved at me, and I recognized Matteo when he joined. I was yet to land my eyes on Theodore Montgomery.
The less I had to see him, the better.
"Ava," the voice came from behind me and I spun around, ready to attack. And of course, Theo stood right there, hands in the pockets of his jeans, looking at me and smiling. "You left randomly last night."
"I did. Is there a problem?" I said.
"I just wasn't sure why. Matteo said you were feeling sick," he said.
There were a few options: I could admit why I left, the reason being that I figured out that Theo was the Theo I was supposed to stay away from, or I could lie to him and push him away without having to reveal myself.
