66| That Damn Star Way Too Close to the Moon
"THE thing about Juliet's Rebellion was that it ended in success. Sure, her parents split up, and that doesn't necessarily seem like a good thing. Love is love, and even through it all, Juliet loved her mother–"
"–except for when she was a backstabbing bitch," Matteo interrupted.
I glared at him, holding my essay in my hands as we walked out of the business building back towards the frat house. Ava was on my left, Matteo on my right. All 3 of us had a class together this semester again. Another business class and probably my last one. But it had been too late to drop courses this semester, so I was stuck with my minimal business-y course load.
"Can you let me get through this without interrupting?" I asked.
Matteo held his hands up. "In my defense, I'm just adding what's necessary."
Ava laughed and I ignored Matteo, continuing to read. "But love can sometimes hold a limit, and Juliet knew when that limit had been reached with her mother. It was the moment Juliet turned over a new leaf of future success, business leadership, and immense love for her handsome and perfect boyfriend–"
Ava elbowed me and I grunted. "Okay, that one was a joke," I said, then folded the essay and put it back in my backpack. "I did get a 96 percent on that essay for my English Creative Writing class, though. So ha!"
"Yeah, you got a 96 because it has Ava in it, and she's like, the most amazing main character," Matteo said.
"Aw, thank you, Matteo!" Ava gushed, reaching over to touch his shoulder. "I do really like your essay, Theo. And I appreciate that you wrote it about me. It shows how attached you are."
"Rude," I muttered, but Ava grabbed ahold of my arm and leaned into me as we walked, which made me ignore her jokingly rude comment. Because like. Love and all.
Fast footsteps caught up with us and a nearly panting Butler walked in step with the 3 of us.
"Hey, Butler," we said simultaneously.
"Hey–hey guys," Butler said, holding onto his backpack straps and catching his breath. "Headed back to the house?"
"Yep," I said, then looked over at him. "Hey, have you heard from Nic?"
"Uh," Butler scratched the top of his head, "no."
"You're not talking?" Ava asked.
"I think he needs time," Butler said. "Don't you?"
Ava smiled. "Yeah, he probably does. And you're both okay with that? Nic's okay with that?"
Butler grinned. "Of course not. But you know... I think after things ended badly with Chad, I figured out that I don't just want some noncommittal asshole to be with. And I think that Nic needs to figure his own situation out. I think he needs to learn to slow down, let himself feel, and stop pretending so that he can realize his full potential isn't just made up of what he's limited himself to."
