21| You've Trapped Me in Your Private Chambers
"AVA!" My dad exclaimed when I finally found him within the huge crowd of people. He was standing in the open kitchen getting a glass of water when I found him and he immediately stopped what he was doing to wrap his arms around me in a warm and tight hug.
"Hey dad," I said, then pulled away.
"I'm so glad you came. I know your mother didn't exactly give you an option, but I'm glad you're here, nonetheless. And you brought friends?" he said.
I smiled and nodded. "I'm glad to come home for the weekend," I told him honestly. I liked having my own freedom and I wasn't exactly homesick, though I could admit I missed being at home with my dad and Will. "I brought a few friends, they're around here somewhere. I'll introduce you later, probably."
My dad grinned. "Amazing. Your mother has been looking all around for you. She's hoping you'll gossip about the sorority, though I'm not sure you're exactly up for that."
I shook my head rapidly. "Yeah, no way."
"If I see her, I'll tell her that you're catching up with the Bloomington's," my dad said, winking at me. He knew that gossiping with my mother wasn't exactly my style. My mother just liked to do it because I was her only daughter and apparently gossiping about other girls (specifically in the sorority) is a "right of passage" in being a girl.
"Thank you," I said. "So, is the party going well? In terms of the business."
My dad took a sip of his water and nodded. "We've got a few good clients we're looking at and already 2 of them have decided to come on board. Our profit margins for 2020 are looking like they're going to be going up by at least 5 percent."
I raised my eyebrows. "That's really strong."
"It is," he agreed. "Expenses are staying under the revenue, debt ratios are low."
"How is debt to asset?"
My dad smiled at me. "2 to 1."
"That's good," I said.
The more questions I asked about the business, the better. I always asked my dad about the business when I got the opportunity. Any time I could slip in a few business terms and remind him of the fact that I knew what I was talking about, I would take the opportunity.
Sometimes, I could get away with doing it and my dad wouldn't really notice. However, certain times – like tonight – he could tell that I was talking business to remind him of the fact that I was going to college for one specific reason: to someday take over C&C.
"Ava, your enthusiasm always gets me," he said with a smile. I already knew where this was headed. And despite loving the shit out of my dad, this was his epic downfall. "You know my stance on this already. I'm not doing it in spite of you, I'm doing it because it's a family tradition. You know that the business is written in Will's name."
