7| Matteo and His Terms of Endearment
WHILE everyone slept, I was awake.
I admit it seems weird considering how much I like to sleep, and how much I especially do not enjoy waking up in the morning. But I'm simple not a morning person. I've been a night owl ever since middle school when I started staying up well past midnight to play video games or make random concoctions in the kitchen when I wasn't being monitored.
So while everyone slept, I swam.
Night time was when my mind wandered aimlessly and every ounce of tiredness was wiped from my body. There were countless escapes that I often partook in when sleep wasn't calling my name, and tonight I picked my poison as such: The small pool in the backyard, water cold and warm at the same time, and I totally could have been naked if only Matteo hadn't walked out right now at 1 in the morning. He sat at the edge of the pool.
"Where were you out so late? Hot date?" I asked.
"Yeah, hot date. With your dream girlfriend," he retorted, wiggling his eyebrows and I knew he was talking about Ava.
"You were with Ava?"
"Sometimes you just so happen to run into people at the library," Matteo said.
"You're not gonna steal her from me are you?" I said, completely joking.
Matteo gave me a look. "Number one, we both know well enough the answer to that. And number two, there's no such thing as stealing 'cause she's not yours in the first place, fucking ding-dong douchebag."
I grinned and swam backwards, pulling my arms up on the edge and holding myself just out of the water, shaking my hair out.
"You're not a wet dog. Stop acting like it," Matteo said.
I ignored him. "What were you doing with Ava?"
"Oh, you know, just what all friendly girls and guys do. Getting it on in the public library!" Matteo said, whistling. "Or, we were talking 'cause she was just sitting in the library all alone bumping music with her earbuds in and, because I'm a godsend, I wanted to provide her some company."
"She doesn't exactly seem like the type who needs company."
"Oh, she certainly doesn't need company, my dear Teddy. But that doesn't mean it's not welcome," Matteo said. "Except for maybe your company."
I splashed water in his direction, but he was all the way on the other side of the pool so it didn't nearly reach him. "Don't call me Teddy. Only my mom calls me that."
"But it's so cute! You're like a little huge bear with curly locks and adorable dimples!"
"Fuck off," I muttered.
"Oh, don't be butt-hurt just 'cause I got to hang with Ava and she basically told you to go to hell," Matteo said. "I think she has her reasons. She must, you know? For, like... not wanting to get involved with the Theo thunderstorm."
