30| Mama's Boy
"MRS. Montgomery! What an amazing surprise!"
"Yes, he is still asleep like a little angel. So adorable when he drools... Yes, I completely agree."
I could barely make out the sound of Matteo speaking from somewhere in my room. I was too tired and I grumbled something I knew came off inaudible because of what Matteo said next.
"He's even cuter when he tries to speak before he's even realized he's awake! Do you want to hear? I'll put the phone closer to his face."
I started blinking my eyes open, only to see that Matteo was standing literally inches away from me, holding my phone close to my face. I tried to reach out and grab it, but Matteo pulled away and moved across the room.
"Yes, he still snores. Sounds like a thunderstorm, let me just tell you," Matteo said, laughing.
I grumbled and sat up, wiping my eyes before I stood up and walked over to Matteo, holding out my hand. "Give me the phone, idiot."
Matteo gasped. "Did you catch that, Mrs. M? Yes? He did, he called me an idiot. I don't think he's learned his manners, in which case he must not be your true son."
I snatched my phone away and pressed it to my ear. "Mom?"
"Oh, honey!" my mother exclaimed. "I just love talking to Matteo. I didn't mean to wake you, but I'm glad he answered on your behalf."
I glared at Matteo and he blew me a kiss. Fucking idiot.
I ran my free hand through my hair and yawned. "That's okay. Why are you calling so early on a Friday?"
"It's almost noon, darling. Slept through your classes?"
I groaned. "Apparently," I muttered. "Sorry. Um. What's up?"
My mom chuckled. "I was calling because we are throwing a family event tomorrow night here at home. Your dad and I want you to be there, as it is semi-business-related. But it's also just a party. A fun little gathering! We were going to wait a few weeks for fall break, but we just couldn't hold it in anymore. We just want an excuse to bring you back home for a night!"
"Mom, it's a 4-hour drive."
"And you need to bring friends!" she exclaimed, ignoring my comment. "Bring Ava."
I nearly choked on nothing but air. Matteo, who was leaning in closely to hear the conversation, widened his eyes as well. He mouthed for me to put it on speakerphone, and so I did. We sat down on the end of my bed.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Honey, Nicolas couldn't keep his mouth shut when he got home early this morning—"
I furrowed my eyebrows again, even more confused. "Nic went home?" I whispered to Matteo, which just earned me a shrug. I thought he had a lacrosse game today, but it must have been another one of his effortless and seemingly confusing lies.
