ON Tuesday, I had one class at 4 in the afternoon, which left the rest of the day open to do schoolwork and pretty much whatever else I wanted. Skylar had to get up early for a 7am class, so when I woke up an hour and a half later, she was already gone.
I woke up, dressed, and sat in my bed reading for about an hour before I heard a knock on the door of the apartment. I managed to pull myself out of bed to answer the door and Matteo was standing on the other side.
"Ava," he greeted. "I knew you'd be here."
"How did you know that?"
"I asked Skylar," he said, leaning up against the doorway. "I thought I'd ask if you wanted to get breakfast on campus. My treat. Just 'cause I'm a saint."
"Breakfast with just you?" I asked.
"I promise Theo isn't hiding around the corner or outside. I also promise he's not going to 'accidentally' bump into us when we get to the café," Matteo said.
I smiled. "Let me grab my wallet—"
"Woman, I just said my treat! I'm not doing it to be a gentleman, I'm just a goddamn amazing person," Matteo said. "Grab a jacket, though. Hace frío."
I grabbed my jacket and Matteo and I left the apartment building and began the walk across campus to the Pages Café inside of the Bird Library.
"So," Matteo said as we walked, "you know about my dirty little secret."
"What?" I asked.
"The smoking," Matteo said. "My, my, don't tell me that you already forgot! I know that Theo told you last night."
"Oh," I said, remembering last night.
Theo and our conversation about Matteo and his smoking had been a complete surprise. The part about Matteo having been addicted to other drugs (unknown ones to me) and relapsing was, once again, completely unexpected. I had nearly forgotten after last night.
After the conversation and we headed into the backyard, we spent the rest of the night as a group hanging out in the backyard. We mostly talked and it was a chill small gathering as opposed to the huge parties thrown last week.
"I know Theo like he's my fucking second eyeball," Matteo said.
"That's definitely not a saying."
