29| An Amazing and Romantic Double-Suicide
IT wasn't long before Ava and I were in Matteo's car (he was letting me borrow it since I knew Ava wouldn't get on my motorcycle just yet) and on the way to an adventure I knew she'd enjoy. She needed to let loose more. I was going to help her do just that.
I'll admit when I walked into the apartment and saw Nic it was a bit of a shock. I knew he was in town for a lacrosse game tomorrow, though I also knew (since he was Nic), he'd most likely been in Syracuse for more than just a few days, skipping school, and doing who knows what.
It was a miracle Nic hadn't been kicked out of private school at this point. The only reason likely being that he had an untouchable spot on the lacrosse team and no matter what he did, the coach wouldn't let Nic be expelled. Neither would our parents. They didn't know the full extent of what Nic did in his free time, but they knew that Nic had grown up having a harder time than I did. he acted out more and for what reason, none of us seemed to understand. Though Nic and I were fairly close, we weren't nearly as close as Ava and her brother. I knew that Nic did as he pleased and didn't care about the repercussions, but I didn't understand him well enough to get why.
I changed the song playing through my phone connected to Matteo's speaker and 'Wesley's Theory' by Kendrick Lamar came on.
"See, Juliet? Real music."
She rolled her eyes. "Rap?"
"Hip-hop. But yes, precisely," I said. "The entire concept of this album is insanity. Each song is laced with references to US history and it makes you question the narrative as each song passes. If you haven't experienced the entirety of this album, you're missing out. I would play the whole thing if we weren't just seconds away from our location of the night."
"And where are we going exactly? Because this," Ava gestured towards the open road ahead of us, trees covering both sides of the road and nothing to be seen in the distance, "looks like you're going to murder me."
"Maybe I am," I joked. "I brought a bottle of poison. I thought we could take Romeo & Juliet to the next level."
"Oh shut up."
"Just wait. You'll love what you see once we arrive," I told her, pulling off into a dirt parking lot and stopping the car. "And with a small walk, you'll see in no time."
"You're seriously going to murder me."
"I seriously am."
I got out of the car and Ava followed suit. I went to the trunk of Matteo's car and opened it, pulling out a backpack and slinging it over my shoulders. I shut the trunk and locked Matteo's car, then held out my hand.
"We're supposed to be friends, Theo."
"We both know there's more to it than that."
Ava sighed and took my hand in hers and we started walking down the dirt path ahead of us. Her hand in mine felt right. It didn't feel like when other girls I'd been with for a few nights or a week tops, when they would grab my hand or try to hold it. Honestly, I'd never been much of a hand-holding type of guy. It gave off the wrong message to most other girls; the message that I was interested in the long-term.
