chapter twenty-two- the letter

Ben sulked in his throne room. It had been a full week since he had asked Rey to join him in creating a new order. A week where he hadn't seen Rey, not one glimpse.

As soon as he had asked her, she had shaken her head slowly, almost as if she was offended by his request, and had left the room.

Ben had been giving her space. He didn't run into her in the corridors or mess halls. He didn't purposely try to lurk around where Rey was.

Of course, he had spies planted around, and if they saw Rey, they reported to Ben saying what part of the Steadfast she was on and what she was doing. Typical stalker stuff.

But it wasn't anything like actually seeing her. No, it was nothing alike.

Ben yearned for Rey. He missed her terribly. He hated that he had driven her away, but what else could he have done? She had said how she had nowhere to go and he had offered her the galaxy. He had offered to strike down the First Order and bring a new order, with her.

And she had denied his request.

"She'll come around. I know she will," Ben thought as he crossed his legs, raising his shoulders and puffing his chin out to convince himself.

She'll be back.

"Checkmate," Rey said, smiling at the chess board.

Poe groaned. "Are you kidding me? Three times in a row?" He begrudgingly knocked his king over. To his annoyance, Rey had won the last three games.

Rey chuckled. She smiled, meeting Poe's eyes.

She was so glad that Poe explained to her that he thought of her as a sister, and that he had been misguided in thinking of her romantically. Rey had too much stress on her, so when she had found that out, a lot of the stress had been lifted off her shoulders. She still had been struggling finding out she had a brother, and that her brother had died, but that would take a while to heal.

"How are you holding up?" Poe said, bringing the conversation to a sadder tone as he crossed his arms over the chess table, searching her eyes to figure out how she was feeling.

Rey's smile faltered.

It broke Rey, knowing that she had family. Family. That term was vague to her. She had grown up on Jakku with absolutely nobody- no friends, and no family. For years, Rey had been alone. And now that Poe told her he how he loved her and that she's like a sister to him, she finally had somebody.

"It's odd," Rey began. "Thinking you killed your grandfather, just to find out it was a clone." Rey sniffled. "And to find out my own father was a clone- I don't even understand how that is possible," she said, tears threatening to spill out of her eyes. "And then I found out I had a sibling. A sibling, finally. Family. Who abused me. And then died," she said in a whisper. "It's all very emotional," Rey said as she looked down, averting eye contact, wiping her eyes.
