Lyrics and Their Meaning:

I saw you looking brand new overnight
I caught you looking, too, but you didn't look twice
You look happy
You look happy

Hypothetically, the protagonist is out in a bar (or a club, wherever you hang out when you're missing your ex) and they see their ex just fine, when they're really not fine at all. They catch their ex's eye, but the ex turns away.

Flashing back to New York City
Changing flights so you'd stay with me
Remember thinking that I got this right

Memories flash through the protagonists brain as they remember a specific memory of changing flights just to spend time with their ex. Back in that mindset, they thought they'd hit the jackpot for lovers! No more surfing for another fish because I have someone who's amazing right here with me!

Now I wish we'd never met
'Cause you're too hard to forget
While I'm cleaning up your mess
I know he's taking off your dress
And I know that you don't
But if I ask you if you love me
I hope you li-li-li-lie
Lie to me

The protagonist isn't coping. They're stuck in this toxic love triangle of their ex, themselves and the ex's new partner. Sometimes, the protagonist just wants their ex to say, 'yeah, I still love you.' Even if it is a lie.

It's three A.M. and the moonlight's testing me
If I can make it 'til dawn then it won't be hard to see
That I ain't happy
I ain't too happy

The protagonist is still up at 3am (I hope they don't have to work tomorrow! {today?}) and they are just lounging around at their break-up hotspot. If they don't pass out from the amount of alcohol they've consumed or (dare I say) drugs, they know that everyone will be able to see that they're still caught up on their ex.

Flashing back to New York City
Changing flights so you'd stay with me
Problem was I thought I had this right

Memories are still flooding through their brain, but now with their older mindset, the protagonist realises that they thought that they were right. Did they really have it right?

Singin'
Li-li-li-lie, li-li-li-li-li-lie
Li-li-li-li-li-lie, li-li-li-li-li-lie
And I know that you don't
But if I ask you if you love me
I hope you li-li-li-lie

I honestly cannot fathom this part, I think the writing team had a bit of a brain fart at the end of this song and just thought that they'd end the song differently to any of their other songs...

Yay or Nay: A beautifully sad, yay.

What It Reminds Me Of: A toxic relationship. Period.
