Lyrics and their meaning:
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know you don't want it any other wayToxic relationships are not uncommon in our world and the protagonist might just be stuck in one. This chorus shows how hard it is to leave someone that you love when they are bad for you. It's almost a case of Stockholm Syndrome.
Why do we always gotta run away?
And we wind up in the same place
It's like we're looking for the same thing
Same thing, yeah
Yeah, do we really gotta do this now?
Right here with all your friends around
In the morning, we can work it out
Work it outThe first part of this verse explains that they keep running away from their problems, fights and misunderstandings. The line It's like we're looking for the same thing could resemble that they both want this relationship to work out but they are not willing to let it play out.
The second part to this verse shares how the protagonist is just down right sick of them making a scene in front of their friends and loved ones. In the morning we can work it out could refer to how they'd have sex then sleep and wake up and be brought back to reality where they have problems that need to be solved.
I love you so much that I hate you
Right now, it's so hard to blame you
'Cause you're so damn beautiful
You're so damn beautifulThis pre chorus is showing the contradicting side of this protagonist. They love their partner so much that it's bad fo
Every time that you say you're gonna leave
That's when you get the very best of me
You know we need it like the air we breathe
Air we breathe, yeahThe protagonist's partner keeps threatening that they are going to leave. However, they may not really mean it. Instead they are trying to produce the reaction that they want from the protagonist (I.E. That's when you get the very best of me). Both of the characters need their relationship. They use the example of air, you need air to stay alive. They're basically saying that they need them like they need air.
The hardest part of all
(Da-da-da-dum-da-da)
Is that we're only built to fall
(Is it any easier?)The protagonist is starting to really contemplate their relationship and they're wondering if they set themselves up to fail (or fall).
Favourite Lyric: 'So damn beautiful'
Yay or nay: Absolute YAY!
What it reminds me of: This song brings me back to the ripe ol' days of 2019. Before COVID, before social distancing and before excessive toilet paper hoarding. It reminds me of Luke's old relationship with she who shall not be named, and how it seemed really toxic. It could also relate back to Ashton's relationship with the the other she who shall not be named.
