The protagonist is reflecting on their past. They were not the best persona and they never felt worth what they had. And the line demons I try to defend, but I couldn't get enough can be taken two ways. It can be taken as substance abuse (i.e. drugs or alcohol) or as their mental health decreasing to nothing.

Either way, they were slowly fading into nothing, constantly being under an influence. They'd constantly wake up next to someone new, not pleased. Longing for something. That was, until they found their partner.
