I walked into my new home for the second time. It took only one time to decide that I was going to live here.

It's a perfect one story house. As soon as you walk in there's a small hallway. The first opening on the right is a small kitchen. If you continued down that hallway, the living room was on the right. To the left of the hallway was my room that had its own bathroom. May sound small, but that's all me and Daryl, my German Shepard, really needed.

Yes, I named him after Daryl Dixon. The guy is a badass and The Walking Dead is my favorite show. Daryl finally came in from the front yard, panting at my side. He was just as excited as I was.

"We're finally home buddy." I scratched behind his ears and his tail wagged.

"Do you need me to call over a few people to help you move in?" A voice scared me.

I turned to my realtor, Diana. She pulled out her phone, but I stopped her from pushing in any numbers.

"That won't be necessary Diana, but thank you."

"Are you sure honey? They'll be here fast. Plus you live alone."

I let it pass that she indirectly called me weak. And to think she might have been on the feminist side.

"Seriously Diana, I'm fine. Thank you for all the help though. I'm sure you have other clients to attend to."

She sighed, "Unfortunately. Remember to call me in a week. I'd like to know how you're doing here."

"I'll be sure to do that! Bye now," I nearly rushed her outside of the door.

When she was finally gone I screamed with excitement. It echoed throughout the temporary empty house. Daryl barked over and over again making me laugh. He must have been amused by his echo.

I sighed, maybe I should start bringing stuff in. I exited the house and am greeted by the beaming sun. San Diego is so pretty, I still can't believe I'm starting fresh out here. Nobody knows who I am or what I've done, it's a thrilling feeling for me. I abandoned all my struggles and stress back home in San Francsico.

First, I grabbed my mattress from the U-Haul truck. Mine as well start off easy. Once I got that in my room, I went back out to retrieve all the dismembered pieces of my bed frame. As I placed another piece of the frame against the wall, Daryl began to bark. There's probably a cat outside. Then I hear a knock on the door.

I crossed my fingers it wasn't Diana. She never knew when to leave me alone. I turn into the hallway and see a guy. He had a welcoming smile on his face.

I approached the open door. "Hey, may I help you?"

"I think I should be the one asking you that," he smirked. "I'm Vic, I live next door."

Daryl suddenly jumped on him, giving him wet kisses. "Daryl down!" I ordered. He obeyed quickly and sat behind me.

Vic laughed. "So that's Daryl, who are you?"

"I'm Audrey, Audrey Monroe."

"I like that name. Anyways, I couldn't help but notice you're moving in on your own. Can I help?"

"Are you sure you're not busy?"

"Not at the moment," he assured. "So what do I grab first?"

It took us about an hour or so to get everything into the house. I didn't have a ton of things. I've come to the conclusion that this guy is chill. He has a friendly personality. Anytime I struggled, he immediately helped.

The only thing that really threw me off is that he pretty much knew where every room was in the house. One of the boxes had bedroom on it, and before I could tell him where it was he went off.

"So Audrey, where did you live before?" He asked sitting on the couch we had just dragged in together. He looked drained, so I grabbed a water bottle and threw it in his direction.

"San Francisco," I answered, sitting next to him. Daryl then squeezed in between us.

"Cool, why'd you move from such a great city?"

"I just got tired of it, of everything. I wanted to try something new so now I'm here."

"Do you have any family or anyone out here?" He took a sip of his water.

"No. It's just me and Daryl." I patted his head and he licked my hand in return. "So how are the rest of our neighbors?"

He gave a nervous smile. "They're okay. I never got along with them. Mostly because I used to have huge parties."

"Sounds fun. Did the person that lived here before hate you too?"

He stood quiet for a moment. "No. He was actually my best friend."

"Why'd he move out? This place is pretty rad."

"He passed on," he said nearly audible.

Diana never mentioned this. She probably thought telling me would jeopardize the sell. It might have, I'm super paranoid at times.

I didn't know how to respond. Usually, saying 'I'm so sorry' is an option but it's so overused I feel like it doesn't mean anything anymore. What else do you hear besides that?

"What was he like?" I asked, hoping he didn't take it too straight forward or personal.

"Shy, but sometimes a riot. He was also a pro at the guitar. A good guy, never once seen him mistreat a person who didn't deserve it."

"He sounds awesome," I sighed. "I lost someone recently too, my brother. Can't say he was nearly half as good as your friend. Anyways," I tried to change the subject. "Want a sandwich or something?"

"This water is just fine," he smiled. "I should get back to my house now. My brother is coming later on tonight and I need to clean up a little."

"I'll walk you out," I stood up and he followed.

Surprisingly, Daryl didn't join us. As we reached the door Vic turned to me, "Let me know if you need anything else."

"Sure will. Thanks again."

"Daryl shut up!" I groaned from my mattress. It was literally laid out on the floor. The bed frame would have to wait. He continued to bark, letting it echo throughout the house.

It was already ten and I wanted to go job hunting tomorrow. How the hell is that going to happen with this noise?

"Daryl come here boy," I called.

I heard his nails hit against the hardwood floor as he ran into my room. He cuddled next to me quickly. Weird, he only does this when he's scared, which is rare.

"Can I go to sleep buddy?" I asked scratching his back. He whimpered and I rolled my eyes before shutting them. If I was going to continue this fresh start, I'll definitely need a good rest before tomorrow.
