Do magical beings only exist in story books?
The story of a heartwarming friendship between a child and a lonely baby dragon.
[ONC 2020]
[Prompt No. 2]
WuJi is sitting on his bed with his head between his hands and crying when he hears low taps from one of the walls of his home.
'Meara must be climbing my home.' WuJi realizes and walks to where the taping sound is coming from. As usual, the magical window moves to that wall and positions itself in a way that offers a clear view of the human child, to WuJi.
The baby dragon wipes the tears from his face subconsciously as his attention gets drawn to Meara, who climbs up a few branches and sits herself on one of the wider branches and waves to her parents.
When Meara calls her parents to get their attention. 'Appa... Amma.', WuJi parrots the words under his breath remembering the time, long ago, when he too had parents who showered him with love and affection.
The little dragon watches as the human child turns to look at the ocean with a fond look on her face. "Aaaa, Meara likes the ocean." WuJi says smiling to himself.
WuJi's smile widens when Meara turns the other way and stares at the restaurant. "Looks like, she likes to look at the restaurant's kitchen too." He adds before giggling.
The baby dragon was happy. Why? Simple. Because he had just found out that the human child had interests similar to him.. And be it human or dragon, all of us like to make friends with people who have interests similar to us... Isn't it?
WuJi would not admit it easily, but the truth is, that the baby dragon has unknowingly already started feeling a little kinship towards the human child.
So imagine his surprise, when this child spots something and climbs a little higher.
"What is she looking for?" WuJi wonders, before Meara asks, "WuJi, are you trying to play with me?"
"Mn." WuJi murmurs, tilting his head, "Is Darakt, trying to play with her?" WuJi wonders, feeling a little jealous of his home, that he had named Darakt.
Clearing his mind, WuJi concentrates on what Darakt is telling Meara.
'Find for me, the book that is lost.' WuJi hears Darakt, say to Meara.
"What!?" WuJi exclaims, and taps on the walls of Darakt with more force than necessary. "Do you know where my book is?" He asks, pouting at his home.
"Oy!" Darakt exclaims, "You were careless with it last time, so The Book of Answers is upset with you. It has hidden, and only someone with a pure heart can persuade it to reveal it's location." the tree adds, in a disappointed tone.
WuJi's face reddens, as he remembers how he had left the book outside Darakt in a fit of anger when he had not been able to understand what the book was trying to show him.
'You are tupid. I don't need you anymore.' WuJi remembers telling the book that had only ever helped him over the years, and once again tears start rolling down his face.
"I am sorry." Wuji says, regretting his actions, "Please show yourself, I acted like a dum-dum back then, I will never behave like that again." The baby dragon adds, his tone full of remorse.
"There... there. Don't cry WuJi." Darakt says in a comforting tone, "I will give her the rhyme to call the book, and if she is true of heart, the book will show itself to her." Darakt informs and proceeds to whisper the rhyme to Meara, who recites it perfectly.
WuJi watches as a crack forms on Darakt, and the child removes the book of Answers from it.
"Yippee...She got it!" WuJi says jumping up and down, clapping his hands.
"Not so fast, WuJi. Now you need to find a way to get it from her. Uhmmm... you should talk to her." The ancient tree suggests.
"Really? No... No... You talk to her." WuJi says, feeling apprehensive and shaking his head.
"No, I won't," Darakt says, resolutely.
"B..but... Darakt I... " WuJi opens his mouth to come up with an excuse for not talking to Meara, when he hears her ask, "Mn...what does 'Book of Answers' mean, WuJi?"
WuJi looks at Darakt with pleading eyes that say, 'Please talk to Meara.' But the ancient tree ignores the baby dragon's plea and remains silent.
After a few seconds of silence, WuJi hears Meara ask, "Can... I open it?"
The baby dragon panics, and starts gesturing the tree to answer.
When Darakt remains silent, WuJi pouts one last time and bites out, "Bad friend!"
He watches Meara, put the book on the branch very carefully, and the baby dragon knows what the human child intends to do next.
He climbs on the wall of his home, and stands next to the window that has now moved next to the branch Meara is sitting on.
"Please don't. It's mine." The baby dragon whispers, gathering all his courage.
"WuJi?" Meara asks hesitantly.
That is how the human child and the ancient baby dragon end up talking for the first time. And by the time the child returns to her parents, both feel like they have truly found someone who they can finally call... A friend.
WuJi watches as Meara climbs down the tree, and introduces herself to a bunch of kids. WuJi's heart hurts at the way the mean kids call his friend names, "Tupid kids!" He mutters under his breath, before turning his gaze on Meara, who looks heartbroken.
WuJi suddenly gets an idea, when he remembers that only Meara can hear him. He moves closer to the window, and declares loudly, "You are not weird. You are nice."
Meara stops and stands straighter. And when she starts walking again, there is a bounce in her steps, which lets the baby dragon know that his words have been heard...and that his new friend is not sad anymore.
