I felt a sharp tug at my scalp and nearly yelped out. The handmaids' hands worked tirelessly, forming small fishtail braids across my head. I sat in front of the large circular mirror, forced to stare at my reflection as I criticized myself silently.
God, why do I look like that?
I hurled every critical depiction of my imperfections at myself until my chest felt tight. I ripped my eyes away from the mirror long enough to get dressed with the help of a few handmaids.
A satin purple robe adorned my long flowing white dress with detailed embroidery. I was fitted with an iron headpiece that went around my intricate hair design. It was often strange at times to have so many people bustling around me, trying to ensure that every single piece of hair was in place.
A bit stifling as well. I felt like I was often holding my breath with their faces so close to mine, eyes glued to even the most minute details of my entire being.
They finally finished and were quite proud of their work. By our society's standards, I did look rather ravishing.
A true princess.
My hair was all pinned up now as my long, braided locks were set in place on my head. I touched them gently, already feeling the pain they would cause my tender scalp.
Sigh. Today was going to be a big day.
I walked outside of my newly furnished quarters in the beloved castle of our capital and faced another one of my handmaids outside the door. She was startled by my presence, and I immediately tried to calm her.
"Good morning," I said kindly with a smile, as I continued gracefully down the winding porcelain staircase. She smiled back and continued to my room to clean. As she returned to a calm state, a quick drop off at the end of the stairs led me to my duty for the day.
I lived on Chandrila. A quaint and safe planet filled with rolling hills and calm seas. It was the most tranquil place in the galaxy.
For me, at least.
I met my assistant at the bridge and called out to her, "Vera!"
She rushed over immediately as we were already running late.
"Yes, Your Grace? I apologize if I left you waiting!" she apologized worrisomely.
"It's no problem, but remember that I do have a busy schedule today, yes?"
She nodded and as I started to walk away, I felt compelled to turn back around. "And it's okay Vera, really. Time is just simply of the essence today."
I offered her a soft smile as I felt her nervous energy slack.
She led me to my private ship with the pilot, Vican, already waiting for me.
"Good morning, Your Grace. Where are we off to today?" he asked politely.
"Good morning Vican, we'll be going to meet with the Senate. An urgent meeting has been called."
Following in the steps of my ancestor Mon Mothma, I served as Chandrila's newest senator in the Galactic Senate.
While other planets had rules on who could remain in leadership while serving on the Senate, our planet had a new enlightenment on the advantages of having one ruler for both. I hailed from Hanna City, which was our nation's capital. A democratic society indeed, but the inhabitants were desperate for new leadership following the rise of Kylo Ren.
