I would be lying if I said the next three days went smoothly. Jasper had taken a turn for the worse, and he spent most of the day moaning in pain so loud that it drove the entire camp crazy. People yelled cruel things at him; telling him to shut up and die already. I stayed on the third level with him a lot, mainly because I was afraid someone would actually come up there and try to kill him. Murphy in particular.
The only person up there more than me was Monty. He stayed by Jasper's side, never losing hope that he would get better. We had to stay positive. If we didn't, Jasper didn't have anyone fighting for him. Clarke was doing everything she knew to do, but his wound was starting to get infected. It didn't look good.
I finally took a break, climbing down the ladder and walking outside. I breathed in the fresh air; the woodsy scent that I learned helped to calm me down when I was riled up. I looked around at the progressing wall that was being built around camp. I knew we needed it, but a wall wouldn't stop the grounders. Not if there were hundreds or thousands of them. Did we even stand a chance if they attacked? Hardly any of us were trained in combat.
My mind shifted away from the troubling thoughts when I went to stand by Miller as he used his ax to chop up some wood. He glanced up at me, "The wall's doing good."
I nodded, "Yeah, I'm surprised how fast it's going."
"Bellamy's putting more people on watch too," he said as he split the wood in half. "Honestly, I don't know if any of this will really help us. I feel like we're all sitting ducks in this place."
"Me too," I glanced at the people working on the wall. "I wish there was a way to find out how many grounders we're dealing with, and why they seem so hostile towards us." I also knew that if continued down the path we were heading, a lot more people were going to die.
"I don't really care what their reasons are," Miller answered as he turned to help with the wall. "They're the enemy, Harley."
The enemy. They certainly made us think so when they almost killed Jasper and strung him up in a tree for bait. I wanted to just agree with Miller and the others. They were just the enemy and nothing more, but it seemed like things on earth weren't simply black and white. The grounders had proved that they were ruthless, but after surviving on the ground for so long, did they even know any other way?
"Hey," I turned my head to see Octavia walking up to me. "Did you know about Atom?"
"No, what about him?"
"Apparently, Bellamy did something to him when he saw us kissing in the woods," Octavia shook her head. "He won't tell me what he did, and now, Atom won't even talk to me." Saying Bellamy was over-protective with Octavia was a major understatement, "Can I ask a favor, Harley?"
I had a bad feeling that her favor involved Bellamy, "Let me guess, you want me to talk to Bellamy to get him to let you and Atom live happily ever after?"
