flashback >> to the day when Chase and Zero first met.
"Zero is a pretty unique name," Chase complimented. "I like it. I wish I had a cool name like that."
At this, Zero gave Chase a small grin, "You think so? That's a first."
"I do," Chase admitted. "I'd give anything to have a name like that. Your parents must be really cool to name you something like that."
"It's not my real name," Zero confessed, looking away. "Can we talk about something else?"
Chase didn't say anything - and neither did Zero. They stayed like that, standing on the shore of the beach in the darkness, being enveloped by nothing but freezing cold air. Chase was now almost concealed with goosebumps. The hair on his arms were now erect and he had to hug himself to keep himself from shivering.
Zero was shivering as well, but he didn't look bothered by it at all. In fact, he continued to stand there, with his hands at his sides, gazing at the ocean - captivated.
Chase finally cleared his throat after what seemed like a decade in unbearable silence, "Zero?"
Zero nodded in response.
"What's one thing you want the most in life?" Chase questioned.
Zero tilted his head, as if he were thinking. Then, he bent down and grabbed a pebble from the sand. He took a few steps back and tossed the pebble into the sea, watching it skip a few times, leaving endless ripples in every area it made contact with.
"Happiness," he answered. "I want happiness."
