"Me too," Zero sighed.
What followed after that was silence. Chase had no clue what to say. Yet, before he could help it, he opened his mouth and uttered the word; "Why?"
He assumed that Zero was going to ask him what on Earth he was talking about, so he proceeded to open his mouth once again to explain, but he was cut off by Zero who was now staring down at his lap with a shameful expression.
"I don't know," he responded, his voice barely above a whisper. "I just.. I-.. I don't know."
"You can tell me," Chase reassured, biting down onto his lower lip harshly to keep the tears welling in his eyes from cascading down his cheeks. He clenched his fists on his lap. He was mad - yet not at Zero. He was mad at himself for never having realized that his best friend was going through such a hard time. He felt like a failure of a best friend.
"I know I can tell you," Zero sighed, squeezing his eyes shut. "B-But I don't know how."
Chase let out a shaky breath, scooting closer to Zero. He forced himself to look at Zero and he felt a pang in his heart from how broken the male appeared. This was the first time Chase had seen Zero look so vulnerable.
"What's on your mind right now?"
Zero appeared to hesitate for a moment before taking in a deep breath, "I wish things were better for me. Does that make me selfish?"
"No," Chase responded almost immediately, giving Zero a reassuring smile, with tears now steadily racing down his cheeks. "That just makes you human."
"Human," Zero sighed, massaging his temples with his eyes squeezed shut. "That's the one thing I wish I wasn't."
