day twenty-three.
It was the day of the funeral. It was scheduled to begin at around half past eight - so after having attended school for the day and purchasing a few packets of food meant for kittens from the local store, the pair changed into the black attire they had picked out and waited outside for the driver they had arranged.
Chase noticed Zero shifting his weight from beside him.
"What makes you nervous?" he questioned curiously.
"I don't know if I'm ready to see her," Zero confessed. "Even though she can't technically hurt me anymore.. I just-.. I don't know."
Chase was about to offer him a hug, however, he was reminded of the events that had taken place after the kiss that day and didn't want to risk making things worse. So, he decided to just remain silent.
When they first arrived at the scene of the funeral, all eyes were on Zero.
All his relatives began to murmur and whisper to each other.
Their piercing eyes were doing a great job at making Chase feel uncomfortable - however, for Zero? Not so much.
He held his head high and for the first time, he looked confident.
The service began a few minutes following their arrival - and whilst everyone around them shed tears, Chase and Zero's cheeks remained dryer than a desert.
Before the burial of the casket, the priest at the site announced:
"We would like for Maria's adopted son to speak a few words."
Zero visibly tensed up. However, he regained his composure after a mere second and strode over to the podium. He cleared his throat and took his time, scanning all the guests who were present there.
And, with a smile, he spoke, "I have nothing to say."
What followed was a symphony of gasps - and the whispers began once again. Yet, this time, they were a little louder.
Before Chase could react, Zero made his way over to where he stood. He wrapped his fingers around Chase's wrist and dragged him all the way out of the building.
What a day to remember.
