Chapter 16 Shanghai

15th November 1942

Tine and Sarawat went to the dining hall to have breakfast as usual, the waiter came with their orders and it was at this moment Tine noticed that Sarawat was staring at an empty seat in front of him

"Sarawat? Are you ok?" Tine asked shaking him a little bit

"Ok? Y... yes... I think so..." Sarawat replied but he sobbed as he looked back at the chair. 

"Where is Fukuda? He's late... that's pretty unusual..." Tine said trying to focus on something else since what happened the previous night was simply... too much for both of them. 

"I heard that he got off the ship as we arrived in Shanghai, he had to check a few things... but I'm sure he will be back for lunch... by the way ...Tine... what do you..." Sarawat needed to talk, he needed to express his feelings about that night, but Tine simply didn't want to 

"What do I think about this cake? Well, it's delicious, isn't it?" Tine said, Sarawat sighed and looked away since he understood that Tine didn't want to talk about what happened, he thought that he just wanted to forget that

"And... Sarawat... didn't you hear something strange last night? Like someone begging for mercy?" Sarawat looked at him confused and scared, what was he talking about? 

"What? What do you mean Tine?"

"I don't know, I couldn't sleep so I went to the private promenade... and I heard something coming from miss Nakano's room, it sounded like the voice of a young guy... he said something like... ummm... don't harm him... please... he sounded like he was pretty scared" Tine replied

"I don't know... since I was sleeping, but probably is nothing to worry about, perhaps you were just tired and you imagined that." Sarawat replied sipping his tea. 

"you might be right... yeah you're right, why should she hide someone? Who could she harm? That's ridiculous... umm, may I have another cup of coffee please?" Tine said as the waiter came close to them. 

"Is there anything for me?" Fukuda asked as he came back on board and arrived at the reception

"Actually yes Fukuda san, a letter, here it is sir" the receptionist said amd gave him the little letter. Fukuda just took it and put it in his pocket and went to the dining hall. 

Just a few steps before the entrance of the dining hall, with all the large windows that make it possible to see the interior of the restaurant from the reception, Fukuda stopped because he heard that the band was playing a delightful melody and sat on one of the armchairs that were there. 

He took the letter and started reading since he had nothing else to do. 

Fischer died, congratulations, your next target is Sarawat Guntithanon and Tine Teepakorn, since it isn't just one target you'll have an assistant who will try to "help" you, of course you won't meet the person that will help you... but you will notice the exellent work that person will leave behind

"Oh God..." Fukuda whispered, he didn't know that Fischer was dead and he knew now that even if he didn't want to kill Sarawat and TIne... someone else was ready to do his job... and he didn't know how to stop that. 

A waiter opened the door as Fukuda entered, he looked at his table where Tine and Sarawat were, at first he was quite calm, he saw that Tine was coughing but since that guy used to eat really fast like he was starving he just tought that it was normal

"Tine, you should eat slowly" Sarawat said without looking at him, as Tine continued coughing after the coffee he just drank Sarawat looked at him slightly irritated

"Tine I told you to... TINE!" Sarawat shouted as he saw that Tine was coughing blood. As the guy in front of him closed his eyes Sarawat stood up and shook his shoulder in an attempt to wake him up

"A doctor... A DOCTOR!" Sarawat shouted, two waiters came there to take him to the hospital of the ship. 

An officer soon came there and stopped Sarawat

"I have to go with him!" Sarawat shouted

"Calm down sir, the doctor will take care of him, he will be alright" the officer said

"Alright? Do you think that I'm just crazy?! He coughed blood and I should just stay calm? What... what..." Sarawat replied but he felt different, dizzy

" I'm ... I... umm..." Sarawat pushed the officer away, he walked for a few meters and then fell onto the floor unconscious. 

Fukuda saw the officers taking Sarawat and Tine to the hospital, he remained standing there for a few moments because of the shock, then he went back to the reception and asked

"Excuse me... have you seen mr Fischer?" 

"Actually sir... he killed himself... his orderly killed himself too... a few passengers saw them shooting themselves and we looked for them for the whole ship without finding them..." the receptionist replied with a sad tone
