"Stay with me Chloe, come on." I heard faintly. I was being jostled around, and the pain in my abdomen was extreme. I coughed, letting my head fall slightly to the side, burying into someones chest.
I opened my eyes slightly and saw the underside of Shane's unshaven face. "Shane?"
"Keep your eyes open." Shane tells me, as he continues to run. I reach up to touch his stubble and see my hands covered in blood.
I turn my hand over and look at it in confusion. Where did the blood come from? I wiggle my fingers slightly, watching as droplets drip down my palm.
I turn my head slightly to see Rick carrying Carl. His body jostling in his arms, lifeless. "I thought.... I protected him." I cough lightly and touch my fingers to my lips. I pull my hand away and see more fresh blood.
"Chloe, I swear, you better keep your eyes open, ya here? Stay with me hon." Shane tells me. I shrug lightly in his arms like 'what you gonna do'. Because what were we gonna do. Carl and I were going to die.
Shane's voice was shaking. If he's scared, then I definitely should be. But I wasn't. All I was thinking about was the blood on my hands and how pretty the sky looked.
I watched the clouds as we ran, my eyes slowly shutting.
"No. No no no!" Shane says, trying to shake me awake, but it's too late. It was way too late.
I wake in a strange, unknown place. I gasp and sit up immediately, scared I was back in the hospital where this all began. I groan and grasp my stomach.
"Hey, hey it's ok." I look for the source of the voice. Shane was sitting beside me. "It's ok."
"Where am I?" I ask him, looking around the room. "Where's Daryl?"
"We found a farm. Not far from the highway. You're safe here." He tells me, taking hold of my hand. He looks down at my arms and then back up at me.
"How's Carl?" I ask him, not acknowledging his staring. He sits down on the bed beside me, using his other hand to push strands of my hair aside.
He looks down. "We need medical supplies. And they don't have it. So I'm going to go with Otis and get some." He tells me. I don't know who Otis is. Does that mean there are more people?
"Wait, you're going to leave me here?" I ask him, starting to get nervous again. He puts his hands on my shoulders and lightly pushes me down on the bed. "You lost a lot of blood. You need rest."
I try to resist him, but I'm too weak. "Please don't leave me." I whimpered. I needed him here. "You need rest before you can take care of your brothers." He tries to explain. I shake my head violently. He sighs, wiping a tear from my cheek. "I'll be back. Rest."
I stare up at him, blinking my eyes a few times to get rid of a few tears. "Come back to me." I whimper. He smiles and drops his head, chuckling lightly. "Get some rest. I'll be back by the time you wake up." He pushes the hair from my forehead away and kisses my head before standing up. "Wait." I call out to him as he heads out.
"Yea?"
"When will I be able to get up?" I ask him. He comes back over. "The bullet went through you, missing all your major organs. It was a blessin'. You'll be able to walk in a day or two. It's just rest you need."
I smile and yawn. "Get to sleep." He tells me before shutting the door behind him. I turn on my side and look out the window, thinking about Daryl as I fall asleep.
I woke up for the first time, listening to a bunch of commotion going on downstairs. I stood up weakly, and wobbled over to the door. Where was I?
"Hurry, he's loosing blood pressure."
I look over the stairs to see them operating on Carl. I swallow hard and take a step back and then moving back to my bedroom. I crawled into the sheets and prayed.
