THIRD POV
After (Y/N) dropped him off he took a seat on a bench and took out his mini notebook.
New me he wrote down, before listing things that he would try and do. Speak up more, learn to drive, invite people to party, be like dad.
As students poured into the school Ian walked in with a look of determination. The bell rang as he trotted into his first period class. He saw that the person behind him had his feet on his seat. Now what would I normally do.... he thought, Well, I'd normally just sit down, but today I have to change. As he was thinking that the kid slid hid other food out of his sandal. "H-hey, us, Gorgamon. Um, would you mind not putting your feet on my chair today?" he asked.
"Sorry dude." Gorgamon said not even looking up from his phone, "Gotta keep 'em elevated. Gets the blood flowing to my brain."
"It just makes it a little hard for me to fit in there."
"Well if I don't have good blood flow, I can't concentrate on my schoolwork. You don't want me to do bad in school, do you?"
"Uh... no." Ian sheepishly replied before slinking down into the chair.
~~~~~~
"First road test. Any volunteers?" the teacher asked.
Ian took a deep breath before raising his hand. Him and a couple of other students got in the car before he started to drive off. At first, on the side streets, he was doing pretty well.
"Take a left here." The teacher instructed, "Now take this on-ramp for the freeway."
"Okay yeah. I'm, uh, super ready for that."
Ian turned onto the ramp that lead up onto the freeway. The cars were going at a much faster pace than he was used to. His hands gripped the steering wheel as he looked out the window to see the cars going by fast, "It's nice and fast." he mumbled with a voice crack.
"Just merge into traffic."
"Yup, just any minute.."
"Merge into traffic."
"Uh..."
"Merge into traffic!"
Ian tried to sneak into the windows between the cars, but continued to swerve out. "I'm not ready!"
"Pull over." the teacher grumbled and they headed off the freeway back to the school.
~~~~~~
The final bell rang and students poured out of the school. A group of four people gathered over at the end of the stairway. Ian looked at them and then turned away. "Oh hey, what up dudes?" he practiced, "I'm uh, having a party tonight, and I was wondering if you wanted to come over and get down on some cake. UGH. That's not something anyone says. Okay don't say 'dudes.' 'Gang'?"
He wrote down the key words on his sweaty palm, before turning and approaching the group. "What's up gang?" he squeaked.
"Oh, hey. Uh, Ian right?" one girl from the group asked Ian.
"Oh, I didn't know you knew my... Anyway." He looked down at his notes on his hand, only to see that they were all smudged except for the word cake. "Um. If you like p-parties, then I'm... I was gonna do a party..."
"What?" the girl asked with a friendly smile.
"What I'm trying to say is that if you're not doing anything tonight... but I-I'm sure you probably are doing something tonight, and you like cake like I like cake, I've got a cake at my house."
"Are you inviting us to a party?"
"That's the one."
"Oh. Yeah, we don't have any plans."
"Yeah okay."
"Totally!"
"Sure!"
"Really? I guess we can take the bus over to my house." Ian said as he relaxed his position. Suddenly a purple van with a unicorn painted on it came flying down the street and into the school. "Ha ha! Is that the birthday boy I see" Barley called out.
"Oh no no no no."
Barley pulled into the school, knocking down a trash can in the process. "Behold! Your chariot awaits!" he called.
Ian turned away from the car. "Do you know that guy?" one of the girls asked.
"Uh..." Ian responded shaking his head no.
"Sir Iandore of Lightfoot."
"Seems like he's talking to you."
"HEY! Ian!" Barley called before blaring the horn.
"He-hey. Barley." Ian blurted, "Yeah, we were actually gonna take the bus."
"The bus? Nay!" Barley scoffed before drawing a sword, "I will give you and your companions transport upon Guinevere!"
"Um, who's Guinevere?" one of the kids asked.
"My mighty steed." Barley answered before slamming the hood, causing the front bumper to fall off, "Oh. That's embarrassing."
When he went down to pick up the bumper, he swept his cape off to the side revealing the top of his butt crack. In face palmed at the sight, getting marker on his face. "He's just joking around."
"You've got something on your face." the girl pointed out. Ian wiped his hand all over his face smudging marker all over it. Once he realized that he smudged the marker he babbled, "You know what? I just remembered that my birthday is, uh, canceled."
"What?"
"I m-mean the party? It was never actually happening. I-It was just this huge misunderstanding. So I gotta go. Okay bye." Ian said before he turned back to the van and got in. There were a couple of parking violations that Ian was about to sit on before Barley butted in. "Ooh. Sorry, lemme just file those."
Barley shoved the tickets into the glove compartment, which had more tickets. "Hey did those kids write on your face?" he asked before licking his finger, "Here. I'll get it."
"Can we please just go home?"
"Mkay, well, we'll just preform your birthday ceremony later with (Y/N) and mom and then you'll be ready for adulthood and it's gauntlet of challenges."
"Speaking of (Y/N) where is she?"
"Mom wanted one of us to help her at the grocery store so I offered to come pick you up, and she went with mom."
"Oh. Okay."
"You know in ancient times, you celebrated your birthday with a solemn quest. Of course those were nothing compared to the challenges of the old days." Barley rambled before they drove off toward their home.
