I walk out of the room and go down the stairs for some water. My head is pounding. I go to the kitchen and see Jennifer sitting at the table looking at pictures. She looks over at me and I notice her face is puffier than Jake's.

"Shawn? What are you doing here?" She says, standing up.

"I'm with my... Friend, she's talking to Jake." I explain and she nods.

"It's good to see you honey. I'm sure you've heard." She sighs and I nod.

"I'm so sorry." I say and she closes her eyes.

"Nothing to apologize for, it was fate." She says and quickly wipes her tears.

"What happened?" I ask, leaning on the counter.

"He had a heart attack on his couch." She sighs and my eyes soften, "he was supposed to be here in October for me and your father's-" she stops when I break eye contact, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"You have nothing to apologize for, it's fate." I shrug and she smiles sympathetically.

"Thank you Shawn." She smiles and I nod.

I have nothing against Jennifer. Only my father.

"Shawn, can I ask you a question?" She adjusts her body and I nod and listen, "Are you going to come to the wedding? Me and Manny would really really love it." She begs and I run my hands through my hair.

"I don't think so Jennifer, I'm sorry." I respond and she bows her head.

"Don't worry about it, I understand. I just," she looks up, "I just hope one day you forgive him, you know?" She mutters. I shake my head.

"I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, Jen. I'm sorry." I tilt my head and she nods.

"It's alright." She shrugs and I purse my lips, "your birthday's in three days." She remarks and I chuckle.

"Yeah, it is." I rejoice.

"That's fun, what are you doing?" She asks and I shake my head.

"Nothing, my birthday isn't a big deal at all to me." I answer and she gasps.

"Nothing? Your birthday's always important, you were born!"

No shit.

"I know, I know, I just don't like celebrating it, but I'm sure my friends are going to do something stupid." I chuckle and she nods.

"If they do, they're good friends." She winks before grabbing a glass from the cabinets, "would you like something to drink?" She asks and I nod.

"Yeah, a water if that's alright." I say and she hums. I hear a door close, Jennifer turns around.

"He wants to be alone for a little bit." Brianna says, jogging down the steps and freezes when she sees Jennifer.

"Oh, your Shawn's friend?" Jennifer asks and Bri's nods.

"Yeah, I'm guessing your Jake's mother?" She says, approaching her with a smile.

"Indeed," Brianna reaches her hand out for a handshake but Jen pulls her in for a hug, "nice to meet you..."

"Brianna." She chuckles in Jennifer's chest, she's a lot shorter compared to her.

"Nice to meet you Brianna." She squeezes Brianna and let's her go. Brianna face is flushed when she emerges from my soon to be stepmother's arms.

"I see you've met my soon to be wife." I hear my father say, Brianna smiles.

"I have, you two are engaged?" Brianna asks and I dart my eyes at her. I look at Brianna, not wanting my father anywhere near her.

"Yes, we are! We're getting married in October." Jennifer perks and I scowl at Brianna.

Fuck.

"I don't believe we've been properly introduced, I'm Manuel, Shawn's father as you know." My dad interrupts, and smiles, I roll my eyes.

"Nice to meet you, Manuel. I'm Brianna, a friend of Jake and Shawn." She says and I cringe at the word friend.

"I think we should be going now." I interrupt and Brianna shoots me a glare.

"Oh, alright." Jennifer frowns, "well it was nice meeting you honey." She says to Brianna before patting my shoulder, grabbing her drink and heading up stairs.

"It was nice seeing you Shawn. I wish you would come over more." My father drags and I clench my fist.

"No thanks." I hiss and walk out of the kitchen to the front door.

"I'm sorry about him." Brianna says and my dad nods.

"It was nice meeting you doll." He says before walking up the stairs.

"What the hell was that?" I whisper loudly and she ignores me and walks out the door. I groan and look back to see Jennifer sitting on the stairs.

"So, you two?" She asks, pointing to the door. I sigh and run my hand through my hair.

"Not quite." I answer and she nods.

"It'll get there." She winks before waving. I fake a smile and walk out the door to the car. Brianna's leaning on the side, staring at her phone. I unlock the door and we both go in. She seems to be really into her phone.

"What was that?" I ask and she ignores me, "hello?" I yell and she puts her phone down.

"What?" She shrugs and I shake my head.

"Why'd you act like that?" I say and she sighs.

"Shawn, I can't be rude to someone I don't know." She says and I stare at her.

"You were rude to Maria." I tease and she laughs.

"She was rude to me!" She fights and I nod.

"I know, I was just kidding." I laugh and she looks at me.

"Are you gonna go to the wedding?" She asks and I laugh.

"Fuck no." I start the car and begin to drive down the road.

"What? Why not?" She interrogates and I put my arm on the console.

"Are you blind?" I laugh and she crosses her arms, "I do not want to go to that damn wedding. To fucking hell with that wedding." I yell and she glares at me. She mumbles something under her breath, "what?" I ask and she shakes her head.

"Nothing."
