Chapter 10 - 'I'm Scare'

SHAI POV - 

That night after Theo went home, I started to think. It was never good when I was left alone after a fight… my mind wandered and thought of worst case scenarios.

What if Theo doesn’t really love me?

What if he just said it because he felt bad for me?

Does he actually love me?

When the time comes, will he want to marry me? Will he want me to bear his children?

I hated when I was by myself after a fight. I had to talk to someone, but it couldn’t be Theo. He couldn’t know what happened to me after I fight with someone….

I decided to call my brother, Tanner. Even though he was younger, his advice was better than anyone’s.

After three rings, he picked up.

“Hey Shailene-Beany,” he answered the phone.

It’s all I can do not to roll my eyes at his childhood nickname for me. “Hey, Tan. How are you?” I procrastinate.

I hear him sigh before answering, “Shai, as much as I love you, what’s wrong? Who did you fight with?” he asks.

I take a deep breath before replying, “Theo and I had our first fight.”

“About?”

“About me being sick and him wanting me to stay in bed and rest. Tan, you know me, I can’t just sit around all day and do nothing, even if I am sick. But Theo thought he knew more about me being sick than I did,” I paused, taking a breath. “So after I woke up from a nap, Theo went downstairs to cook me food. After a few minutes, I was bored, so I went downstairs and watched him. He kept wanting me to go back to bed, and I said no. I told him that the only way I was going to get better was by getting fresh air. He kept telling me that I needed rest and I was over it… So I might have overreacted.”

Tanner sighs over the phone, as if I just told him something stupid. “Explain your overreaction, please.”

“I stormed upstairs, got changed, and tried to leave. I needed fresh air and I was going to get it,” I said.

“Oh, my gosh,” Tanner whispers.

“Theo stood in front of the door and wouldn’t move or let me leave. I told him to move and he said, and I quote, ‘I forbid you from leaving this house;. So I might have raged at him for saying that because we don’t even live together, and then I might have yelled about him not being my dad, and me being old enough to take care of myself… And then I stormed out and didn’t come back for like an hour.”

“Shailene,” he exhales, “you, my dear sister, are stupid. You need to fix things with this boy. He has made you the happiest you have ever been in a long time.”

“I know, but what if he doesn’t actually love me? Or what if he doesn’t want to marry me? Or what if he is,” I pause, “Oh, God. What if he is cheating on me with some dumb bitch? Oh, God. Oh, God,” I start to panic.

What if Theo is cheating on me?

No, Theo wouldn’t do that. He isn’t that type of guy…. Is he?

“Shailene Woodley,” Tanner’s voice cutting off my thoughts. “Shai stop. Theo isn’t cheating. He wouldn’t do that to you. He isn’t that type of guy, so forget about him cheating. Shai, ring him up now, and tell him you are sorry and that you love him,” he pauses, taking in a breath. “You do love him, right?” he says quietly.
