PART 21

It felt like they were on the road for hours, the trees past by in a blur, and Aeris couldn't do anything but hold on. He felt like his life was spiraling, good or bad, he didn't know but he felt like he had lost control- like back then. When his brothers realized the extent of his deficiency, well that's what his psychologist called it.

After that, his brothers started treating him differently almost like he was helpless.

He couldn't even imagine how they felt right now, not knowing where he was if he was okay, it made him feel guilty.

Chase stopped abruptly, the wolf letting a feral snarl escape his lips, Aeris whipping his head up in fear. They must have been followed.

One of the living dead stood in the clearing before them, motionless, eyes black as night.

Chase wasn't taking any chances, the wolf planning another course of action in his head and charging in the direction, Aeris holding on for dear life. His meek hands nestled in the wolf's long plentiful fur.

The sky began to darken as the shrubbery seemed to swallow them in its might, the trees becoming large distant beasts as the sun became to set. Aeris knew it was irrational but for some reason, he couldn't keep his eyes off them, half expecting them to come alive any minute.

It was fairly dark out when Chase decided to stop, the male shifting back to his human form, the male exhausted and still very wounded. Aeris couldn't stop the worry that overcame him, the male cradling the alpha in his lap.

"I'm sorry I couldn't keep going... my chest," he panted slightly, the male pointing to the very obvious gash nestled right in the middle of his abdomen.

"We need something to wrap..." Aeris rushed out, the male looking for anything that could be used as a bandage, gripping onto the towel wrapped around his naked form, he ripped a piece off.

"There's no need Aeris please, tomorrow it will be all healed," Chase muttered trying to stop him from destroying the damn thing.

"It's fine, I-I just need a little piece so that I can patch you up, clean it up a bit," he rushed out, the male running over to the rushing creek that ran just feet from them, a darkened ominous cave was across from it, Aeris assuming that's why the blonde had stopped here.

Dipping the piece in the creak, he fussed with it a bit, wringing it out some when it was fully dampened.

Chase was eerily silent when Aeris came back, his azure hues watching the male carefully, calculatingly.

Aeris was no rookie when it came to treating wounds, he was always healing his brothers. Cleaning them up, patching anything that needed to be patched, then sending them back out into the cold, unforgiving world that Aeris was so deathly afraid of.

All through school, kids would pick on him, harass him, bully him, and the twins always come to his rescue.

Always.

They never asked for anything in return and did it like it was their duty in life, their one true purpose.

Aeris shivered as the cold air caressed his bare shoulders, the male working deftly as he wiped Chase down, not only focusing on the gash in his chest but the other cuts and wounds that riddled his entire body.

Aeris felt a hand fall on his shoulder and he looked up, a bit puzzled, and was absolutely shocked when Chase leaned in, the male pressing his lips to his own. Though this kiss wasn't like the other one they shared, it was slow, appreciatively slow.

And for some reason, Aeris couldn't even fathom trying to pull away.

They spent that night huddled in the cave, Chase in and out of consciousness as Aeris watched over him, dutifully checking over him every couple of hours or so. The brunette was worried about the alpha, he had never seen him so weak, so fragile, it was humbling more than anything.

In the morning they set out again.

Chase said it would be only a few more hours until they reached the next big province. There the blonde was sure they could find a hostel to put up in as things began to settle down around them.

It was a good idea, Chase was in no state for battle.

Gripping onto his mane, Aeris spoke to him, they had been riding for a while and the beaming sun had begun to dim once more.

"I don't want to lose you," he stated, the alpha hearing desperation seeping into the boy's tone, it was heartbreaking.

The wolf made a noise akin to being annoyed but didn't say anything else, the brunette wondered if he had been thinking the same thing.

Damien wouldn't stop and after their last run-in with him, he had brought the blonde closer to death than he had ever been before.

Aeris shivered at the thought, the male shuddering closer to the wolf in the cool evening air.

Before midnight, they had begun to approach a quaint town, it was quiet against the sounds of the forest. The only light shown from a motel nestled against a small market. The rest of the town was covered in the shadows of the large forest and trees surrounding.

It was beautiful.

The blonde charged on, the male invigorated at the sight. He had found his mate some shelter and now they could rest and recover.

Chase was itching to be the harbinger of his own cold and calculated revenge.

He just hoped Damien was prepared.

-

Hello, hello! Sorry about the delay everyone. It has been a rather unfortunate time for me, though I thank you for sticking with me through it!

I hope you and your families are doing well in these trying times.
