The dead of night was when it was the darkest, but it was also when the house was at peace. No one was being killed, no one was being chased by a belt, no drunk arguments, no glass shattering. Everything was quiet and for a few moments every night, I felt safe.

Hyunjin had taken me to the roof of the house and laid out a blanket to stargaze.

"Pick a star, princess"

"That one! That one!" I said pointing to a bright little blueish purple star in the middle of a constellation.

"Ohh that's a very special star. You know why?"

"Why?"

"Because that's Bellatrix. She's a very important star"

"What did she do?" I asked innocently.

"Well, first of all, her name means 'female warrior'. She's the third brightest star in her constellation. She's been burning for millions and millions of years and she's still very strong"

"Wow!" I said, completely stunned.

"You can keep her"

"What do I do with her?"

"Well one day if you are scared or lost, just look up into the sky and see how strong Bellatrix is and remember that you are too. She will always be there for you. If you have no one to talk to, talk to her. She will always listen"

"She can hear me?" I said whispering, afraid that she's listening.

"Absolutely! See how the whole sky is dark?"

"Uh-huh"

"Without the stars, we wouldn't be able to see anything. They're helping us. Stars are our friends"

"Which one is your star?"

"YOU'RE my star Emrie"

"Really?!"

"Of course, you light up my darkness. Don't ever change okay? No matter what your father does or says"

"I won't"

"Promise?" He said holding out a pinky.

"I promise," I said, wrapping my small pinky around his.

It was moments like this that made me love the nighttime. Something about the darkness felt so welcoming. The monsters under my bed were my friends and the black abyss was my safe haven.

"Yeah, I think he's going to ask me out tonight at formal!" Jisoo said.

"What are you going to wear?" I asked, texting back.

"I don't know. I need something flashy. Go big or go home"

"You can wear my black strapless dress with the sequins"

"Yeah?"

"Of course! It's in my closet. You can wear anything you want in there"

"Ugh, you're the best. Ily"

"When are you coming back? I miss you"

"I don't know yet. Could be a while"
