Sometimes I feel like author's just include certain lifestyle traits to make their characters different, but they don't really know why they add it, nor do they ever mention it apart from when the character talks about themselves.

Take veganism for example.

I've read a few books where the characters claim that they are vegan, but it's just mentioned in the beginning and doesn't really have any impact on the story.

They don't ask about vegan options, complain about the bad boy's leather jacket, they don't lecture anyone about the environment (sorry, that's stereotypical, but every vegan I've met is like this) and so on and so forth.

So what's the point? Just make them an omnivore like every other human and go om with the story.

(I can picture a South African story where the people want to braai and this vegan person just being totally disgusted, because she doesn't eat meat)

Of course, some of their traits don't matter to the story and can be added matter-of-factly and then never mentioned again, but I feel like traits that affect your lifestyle need to be mentioned more and intertwined with the story.

That goes for eating choices, disorders and syndromes, traditions, religion and so on...
