The way pregnancies are discovered.
So, I've never been pregnant, but I know people who have been and I talked to them about the symptoms.
Nausea, fatigue, missed periods (usually the most obvious one), cravings, sensitivity to smells... Etc.
Now hear me out...
Not everyone gets nauseous, not everyone misses their period immediately, you also don't get morning sickness within a week of falling pregnant, not everyone has weird cravings...blah blah blah.
Honestly, even if I were to get these symptoms a month or so after having sex with a guy, I wouldn't immediately think 'crap, I'm pregnant'.
Why?
Because my period is irregular, so skipping a month won't cause alarm, I get weird cravings all the time and they are REALLY specific, I have been nauseous in the morning from the age of 16 (five years) and I get nauseous from eating in the morning. I'm also sensory hypersensitive, so some smells make me sick (for instance, I can't stand the smell of coffee... Especially early in the morning).
Also, fatigue is another symptom, but as a university student, I work late nights and get up early... And this will only get more intense when I actually start working... So I won't think 'Wow, I'm tired, maybe I'm pregnant'... I'll think I'm overworked.
The other thing is, why do the best friends always suggest pregnancy? Like, your 'virgin' nerdy friend who doesn't even talk to boys (remember, she didn't kiss and tell) is sick so you automatically think pregnant. That's illogical.
The other thing is those characters that are on birth control. People have this 'I'm fine, I'm on birth control' attitude, so why is the first thought that pops into your mind after getting sick in the morning that you might be pregnant. You might just have had some bad fish or a hangover.
