2 May Year 18

As we entered the alley, I saw furniture and household appliances piled up on the street. "Namjoon-ah, what's going on?" Dad asked, breathing with difficulty. We were on our way back from the hospital. It was only about a hundred meters from the bus stop to our house, but my dad struggled even with that.

I ran towards our house. I came and saw mom sitting crouched against the wall behind some furniture. She straightened up when she saw me. "Namjoon-ah, what should we do?" She told me that she fought with the landlord's son who had just come to collect the rent my younger brother hadn't paid.

I brought dad to the storage room behind the neighborhood supermarket. As I moved the furniture, mom cleared up the dishes and food items. Soon, the storage room was full of all the things from our two-room apartment. There were stuff I wanted to throw away. But we needed money.

We were done by the time night came. I was sweating and my back was in pain. My mom handed me chopsticks telling me to eat at least a bit, but I couldn't force anything down.

It was stuffy in the storage room, so I went out to sit on a wooden bench by the supermarket. My mom asked me, "Namjoon-ah, where did Namhyun go?"

"How am I supposed to know?!" I shouted back. Namjoon-ah. Namjoon-ah. Namjoon-ah. I was tired of it. I regretted telling my brother to live without being dragged down. Even if we could last a few days in the storage room, what were we supposed to do after that? I couldn't think of anything.

The supermarket man gave me a can of beer and went back inside.
