Shawn's POV:
It was 12 midnight. It was officially Christmas Eve. Maya was in her room, sleeping quietly. I was about to go to sleep myself until I got a call from my boss. What the hell was he doing calling me at midnight?
"Hello?" I picked up.
"Hey! Shawn! How ya doin'?" He yells with his deep, loud Boston accent.
"Great." I muttered.
"Hey so whatcha doin'?"
"Well, see boss, usually at midnight people are getting ready to sleep."
"There's that humor I love! Anyways you got plans this Christmas?"
"Yes I do actually-"
"Well cancel 'em!"
"What? But I promised the little girl that's living with me a nice Christmas Day over our friend's house and-"
"Don't care. Cancel 'em. You've got a huge project to do for me." He demands more seriously this time.
"But the girl has no mom or dad I can't just leave her!" I yell.
"Hey! Don't use that tone with me. If you don't do this project you're fired! And didn't you say you guys were going to go over your friends house? Well just leave her there!"
"But-"
"No buts! You either do this project or you get fired. What would you rather do?"
"Alright fine, I'll do it." I sigh. There was no way of reasoning with him. I couldn't get fired or else I wouldn't be able to provide Maya with all the things she needs.
"That's my boy!"
I hung up and sighed deeply. Maya will understand. Right?

Maya's POV:"WHAT?" I cried.
"I'm sorry Maya, I couldn't reason with my boss and he threatened to fire me." Shawn sighs.
"MAYBE YOU SHOULD'VE TRIED HARDER THEN! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY LONELY CHRISTMAS' I'VE SPENT? I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT FROM NOW ON!" I shout, tears streaming down my face.
"I can't quit my job Maya."
"Why not? Huh?" I ask angrily.
"Because then I wouldn't be able to afford all the shit you need! If you weren't living with me I would've happily dropped the job. I need this job because of you!" He yelled. I paused for a second. I grew more sad then angry. I couldn't believe he had yelled at me like that.
"Well shit, I didn't know I was such a bother to you. You can go ahead and quit your job because I'm leaving. Have a great life." I ran out the front door and slammed it shut.
"Maya-" was all I heard as I ran away. I wasn't planning on going to Riley's apartment. No. That was too obvious and stupid. I don't want to bother the Matthews anyway. I just kept running. Was that all I ever did when I got upset? Run? Run away from my problems? Really? I didn't care though. It was the best solution I could think up.
I wanted to run away from everything. I was freezing cold but I didn't care. I really should've at least changed from my pajamas. I found a dark alley to lay in. I cried and then drifted off to sleep.
----I felt very uncomfortable as I woke up. Not because the floor was hard though, but because there was two older teenage boys, in my face, breathing heavily and drooling.
"The fuck you looking at?" I ask as I got up. They started running off in a weird way. I assumed they were drunk. But who'd get drunk early in the morning?
I planned on living on the streets of New York City. I couldn't go back to a place where I wasn't wanted. I didn't want the feeling of being not wanted. No. I belong on the streets of New York.
