"Do you like it?" Chase asks, slipping the engagement ring on my finger.
I stare down at the exquisite ring, struggling to comprehend how beautiful it is sparkling on my finger.
"I love it." I whisper, unable to take my eyes off it.
"It looks incredible now you're wearing it." Chase says, beaming proudly.
"Its perfect." I tell him sincerely. "It really is."
The ring is breathtakingly beautiful and neither one of us can stop staring at it. It's an ideal fit now it's been resized and I can't help thinking how thrilled I would be to wear it if any of this was actually real.
"Can we finally tell people that we're engaged now?" Chase pleads with me, awaiting my response.
"Not yet." I say, placing the ring back in its box. "I was thinking we should have a party to celebrate and we can announce it to everyone then."
"A party? You hate parties."
"I do not hate parties!" I exclaim loudly. "Ok, maybe I do but this would be our party and we can invite the people we actually want to share our news with."
"I don't know." He replies doubtfully, not at all convinced.
"I've given it some serious thought and this is how I want to tell people we're engaged. I want it to be a surprise for them."
"Are you sure that's what you really want?" He asks, tucking a strand of hair back behind my ear. "It's just so unlike you. You usually hate being the centre of attention."
"Maybe I need to start trying new things and branching out a bit more. It's never too late to change."
"I don't want you to change." He says softly. "I love you just the way you are."I'm on the phone to Louise a few hours later. I don't have much time and need to tell her what she has to do next.
"You need to tell Chase you're not going to keep it." I inform her, speaking quietly down the phone.
"Why? He's already told me to get rid of the baby so what makes you think he'll even care?" She challenges me.
I keep my eyes on the window, making sure I have time to hang up if Chase comes back early. He's only popped out for a few minutes to pick up some food for us so I know I don't have long to finalise my plan with her.
"Because he'll change his mind as soon as he knows you actually plan on going through with it. Trust me, I know Chase." I assure her.
"He's been ignoring all my calls and messages." She replies dolefully.
"He's been reading them." I assure her. "I see his reaction each time he looks at his phone. You need to tell him you have an appointment booked for a termination and he'll be at your front door within minutes."
We quickly end our call and realise how cold and detached I must have sounded throughout our conversation. I don't know what's happening to me or who I am anymore and that's what frightens me the most.I'm in bed several hours later, pretending to read my book while Chase takes a shower. It's getting more and more difficult to share a bed with him and I don't know how much longer I can keep up with the pretence.
"Is everything ok?" Chase asks, climbing into bed beside me.
He smells incredible as he pulls me in close, all fresh from his shower and annoyingly irresistible.
"I think you got a text." I notify him, nodding towards his phone on the bedside table as it lights up.
He's recently put a new passcode on it so there's no way I can read it behind his back. He's made sure about that.
"Shit, sorry." He apologises, grabbing his phone so he can read it.
"It's fine. I just hope it's nothing serious." I reply knowingly.
He glances down at his phone and inhales sharply, trying to hide his horror.
"I-I have to go." He stammers, scrambling for his clothes as he begins pulling them on hastily. "Everything's fine but I've got to."
"Chase, it's midnight. Where the hell are you going?" I demand harshly, realising Louise must have messaged him like I told her to.
"It's a family thing." He lies blatantly. "Curtis has fucked up again and I need to take care of it."
"Is he ok?"
"I guess I'll soon find out." He replies shortly, refusing to look at me as he grabs his car keys and his phone. "I'll be back as soon as I can."
"This isn't like you, Chase. What's going on?" I question him intently, my voice imploring him to open up and tell me.
He comes to a standstill in the doorway, pausing a few seconds before joining me on the bed.
"I love you, April." He whispers, kissing me on the forehead. "More than anybody or anything."
He rushes out the bedroom and down the stairs, slamming the front door behind him before I can respond.
"We'll see." I say quietly.
