Present day...
"Jesus Christ!" Chase yells, slamming the front door in a rage.
"What's wrong?" I ask, rushing into the hallway to see what's happened.
"I walked into the gym and guess who I saw?" He barks angrily, tearing his sweaty workout clothes off as he marches upstairs.
"Who?" I inquire innocently, pretending I have no idea.
"Fucking Finn!" He shouts furiously, whirling around to face me. "That moron you used to hang out with in school now works at the same gym that I do!"
"You're kidding? Wow... I had no idea." I lie blatantly, feigning ignorance.
"You know I can't stand that guy." Chase complains, pulling the last of his clothes off before switching on the shower. "Such a fucking moron."
"He's not a moron, Chase. He was my friend." I reply delicately.
"Whatever." Chase snaps curtly, opening the shower door so he can step inside. "What the hell is he doing back here? Did you know about it?!"
I try to keep my eyes fixated on his, refusing to let them roam his naked and athletic body like they want to.
"Of course not." I assure him. "I haven't heard from him in years."
"You won't be hearing from him now." Chase responds bitterly. "I swear to God, April. Don't you dare go anywhere near him."
I pick his clothes up off the bathroom floor, trying to busy myself with something so I don't appear guilty or suspicious.
"It makes no sense that he'd move back here. I thought he moved away with Mia a long time ago." I tell him, placing his clothes in the wash basket.
"I don't know why the hell he's back but he best keep out of my way and especially yours." Chase calls out, raising his voice so I can hear him over the noise from the shower.
"Is someone a little jealous?" I tease him, poking my head around the shower cubicle.
"Are you saying I have a reason to be?" He challenges me, staring at me intently.
"That's not what I meant." I assure him, fighting against my instincts to climb in and join him.
"You don't sound too sure about that." He persists, relentless in his interrogation.
"Finn never had feelings for me, Chase. That was all in your head."
"April, I know he liked you back then and I don't doubt he'd try something with you now just to fuck with me."
"It's not like I even go to the gym" I point out, leaving the bathroom. "I won't even run into him."
"You better not." Chase warns me. "I'll kill him if he tries anything."Chase remains in a bad mood for the rest of the night. I don't even try and talk to him as he's so stressed out. We're getting ready for bed a few hours later when he gets another phone call, claiming it's someone from work.
I try to listen in on his conversation but can't hear anything, waiting for him to come up with another excuse as to why he has to leave the house again.
"Everything ok?" I ask him as soon as he enters the bedroom.
"They want me to go away with work for a couple of days." He complains angrily, throwing his phone on the bed in frustration.
"What for?" I ask him warily, trying to figure out whether he's telling me the truth or not.
"It's some training thing at the other end of the country but I'm going to try and get out of it." He informs me, climbing into bed beside me.
"Don't be silly. It sounds pretty important and you should go." I encourage him, still watching him carefully.
"Will you come with me?"
"I don't think so." I chuckle, realising he must be telling the truth if he wants me to accompany him. "I don't want to be stuck in some hotel room all day while you're busy with work."
"I won't go then. I'll stay here with you." He says simply, shrugging his shoulders as though it's no big deal.
"I can always go and stay with my mum while you're away." I suggest, realising that having some space might actually help right now.
"Really? You don't mind? I'll feel much better knowing you're going to stay with her and not be at home by yourself."
He's obviously scared that Louise might turn up while he's away and confess everything to me. Little does he know she already has.
"Of course. I'll give her a ring and tell her I'm coming to stay for the weekend."
"I also don't want that idiot thinking he can turn up and see you while I'm not here." Chase growls fiercely, clearly agitated by the idea.
"Finn won't be going with you?" I ask him casually, trying to act like I'm not too interested.
"No. He's a trainer and the course is for those interested in boxing." Chase clarifies, observing my reaction.
"I see." I reply indifferently, pretending I don't care either way.
