"What's wrong? What's happened?" Chase demands roughly, flinging his car door open so I can get in.
"I'm fine." I reply evasively, closing the door and putting my seat belt on."Just get me out of here."
"April, tell me what happened." He insists firmly, refusing to let it go.
"I will but just get me out of here first." I beg him. "Please."
He finally does what I ask and starts up the car, driving slowly as he keeps glancing over at me in concern.
"Did Finn hurt you?" He asks, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
"Yes." I whisper, lowering my gaze as I stare at my hands folded in my lap.
"That's it. I'm going to kill him." Chase growls furiously, thumping the steering wheel in anger. "Where the hell is he?!"
"It doesn't matter where he is! I've left him and that's all that matters." I affirm strongly, wanting him to listen to me and understand.
"You think I'm actually going to let him get away with putting his hands on you? You think I'm going to let him walk away as though it never happened?!" He roars fiercely, slamming on the breaks so we both jerk forward in our seats.
"He didn't hurt me like that!" I assert fiercely. "That's not what I meant when I said that."
"Then what did you mean?" Chase questions me, persisting until I give him an answer. "Tell me, April."
"I saw him with someone else, ok? Are you happy now?"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me." I sigh deeply, leaning my head back on the seat as I close my eyes.
"You mean he cheated on you?"
"I saw him with someone he works with. I saw them together in his office." I reveal sombrely, trying my best not to relive that torturous memory again.
"Then he's nothing but a piece of shit and he doesn't deserve you." Chase concludes coldly, failing to realise how hurt I am by what I just found out.
"You cheated on me too, Chase." I snap bitterly. "Don't ever forget that."
There's silence between us as rain starts to fall violently outside. Large raindrops hit the car roof as we remain inside it, a safe haven from the outside world and its endless challenges and obstacles.
"I guess that means I'm your second choice then." Chase chuckles, running his fingers through his hair as he slumps back in his seat.
"What do you mean?"
"You found out about Finn so came straight back to me. That's how it seems anyway."
"I haven't come back to you, Chase. I just needed to get away. I could hardly stay with Finn tonight after what happened."
"Fair enough." He sighs, smiling weakly as though he gets it.
The tension is palpable between us and the atmosphere is oppressive. Neither one of us knows what to say so I end up blurting out the first thing I can think of.
"Besides, you're still with Miranda and I don't want to hurt her anymore than I already have." I tell him, a pang of guilt stabbing me in the chest when I think about my friend.
"I've ended things with Miranda." He admits calmly, acting like it's no big deal.
"What? When?"
"A few hours ago."
"Are you serious?"
"There was no point in stringing her along anymore and she was far too clingy for me anyway." He remarks spitefully, rolling his eyes in exasperation.
"How did you tell her?"
"I sent her a text."
"That's awful!" I chastise him. "How could you tell her like that?"
"Because I don't care about her. I didn't want to meet up with her as though it actually meant something to me in the first place."
"You're so heartless." I whisper, closing my eyes as I try and process what he just said.
"I can be." He responds bluntly.
"No need to remind me. I know just how cruel and vindictive you can be." I point out, narrowing my eyes at him in contempt.
"Let's not fall out." He implores me, turning around in his seat to face me directly. "I don't know why you agreed to come here if you didn't want to be with me."
"I'm here because I want to be. I found myself in trouble and you're the first person I thought of." I admit quietly, feeling my cheeks burning red with embarrassment.
He tries to suppress his smile but I still notice. His whole face lights up for a second and I can't help remember how much I love seeing him at ease like this.
"OK." He agrees amiably. "Should we get going?"
"Yeah, we best get a move on or it will be dark by the time we get there."
We drive on and my eyes feel heavy as they begin to close. I'm utterly exhausted and the steady sound of rain outside helps me fall asleep in a matter of minutes.
