I can hardly bring myself to get out of bed the next morning but can hear Chase singing in the shower and it sounds like he hasn't got a care in the world.
Bastard.
I groan, rolling onto my stomach as I bury my face in the pillow. His scent is all over the sheets and I suddenly feel inexplicably smothered and suffocated by him like I can't escape.
"Are you ok?" He asks, startling me as he jumps on the bed beside me. "You look exhausted."
"You can't see my face." I mumble, trying to hide my puffy eyes from him.
"Exactly." He chuckles playfully, grabbing my waist so he can spin me around. "Did you get no sleep at all?"
He's starting to sound worried so I reluctantly turn over, plastering a fake smile on my face.
"I didn't sleep well." I admit truthfully.
"Well, you look beautiful as always." He assures me, placing a kiss on my forehead. "I hated waking up last night to find you weren't there."
For a brief second I allow myself to forget, relishing his touch and the feel of his breath against my skin.
Until I quickly remember.
"I'm sorry. I won't disappear on you again." I tell him, sliding out beneath him.
"Are you sure you're alright?"
"Yes!" I exclaim loudly, jumping out of bed. "I'm just shattered. I'll go back to sleep once you've gone."
I head into the bathroom and slam the door shut behind me, hoping he won't follow me inside.
"Is that your way of telling me to get lost?" He laughs, standing outside the closed door.
"Maybe." I reply evasively, trying to sound like everything is ok.
"Alright, I get the message and I'll leave you to it. I'm going downstairs to get some breakfast. Do you want me to make you anything?"
"I'll be down in a minute." I call out, breathing a sigh of relief as soon as I hear him go.
The bathroom mirror is still steamy after his shower but I wipe it with my hand, staring back at my pale reflection for quite some time.
I always thought I was somewhat average looking. Not unattractive but certainly not breathtakingly gorgeous like Chase is. I've got brown eyes, brown hair and I'm not too skinny but not exactly what you'd call voluptuous.
I was far more insecure about my looks when I was a younger but I've recently started to feel quite good about myself and content with my own appearance.
My eyes close as my tears threaten to spill over once again. I've never felt more ugly or unappealing as I do this morning and
Chase has done this to me. He's made me doubt myself as well as my self-worth and our entire relationship. He stole everything from me and now it's time I take it all back.
I manage to make small talk with him while he eats his breakfast and then wave him off at the front door as he heads off for his run. He'll be heading to the gym straight after so I know I have a few hours to myself so I can gather my thoughts.
The first person I'd normally call in a crisis is my mum but she's on her first holiday in years and I don't want to spoil anything for her. She's gone with her sister so my auntie is out of the question as well. Of course there's a couple of friends who could help but this feels far too personal to explain to anyone. I don't want to share it with someone else just yet.
The person I'd usually turn to is Chase. He's been my best friend as well as my partner for so long no and I literally feel lost now I can't confide in him.
Louise took me by complete surprise by turning up at my house yesterday afternoon. My brain didn't even register who it was for a few seconds once I opened the front door.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded, folding my arms across my chest.
She looked absolutely stunning and immaculate as usual. Her long blonde hair and bright blue eyes sparkling with mischief.
"There's a chance you might find out if you let me in." She retorted sharply, smirking triumphantly.
"Why would I want to do that?"
"Because you're going to want to hear what I have to say." She answered smoothly. "Trust me."
She ended up pushing her way inside and making herself at home as she took a seat on the couch.
"I'll never trust you, Louise. I still remember the way you used to treat me when we were at school."
"You're still mad about that?" She laughed callously, flicking her hair back over her shoulder.
"Just a bit." I snapped, making sure there was plenty of distance between us as I sat down.
"They do say elephants never forget." She quipped, deliberately looking me up and down in disgust.
"What do you actually want?" I prompted her, trying to ignore her spiteful jibe. "Did you just come here to try and humiliate me?"
"Will Chase be home soon?" She interjected rudely, taking me by surprise.
"Yes." I lied, hoping it would encourage her to leave. "He'll be home any minute."
"He's actually the reason why I'm here." She revealed slowly, awaiting my reaction.
"What are you talking about?"
"I just thought you might want to know where Chase was last Thursday night." She taunted me, taking delight in my obvious discomfort.
"I don't know where he was." I answered truthfully. "What's it got to do with you?"
"Because I know who he was with." She teased me, pretending to pause and examine her perfect fingernails for a moment.
"Who?" I asked, shrugging my shoulders in an attempt to seem disinterested.
"Me." She whispered softly, leaning forward so I caught a whiff of her perfume. "He was inside me."
I was lost for words for several seconds, struggling to control my rage and the uncontrollable urge to throw myself at her and pull her hair out.
"Louise, you've officially lost it." I laughed, shaking my head as I made my way to the door. "Get out of my house."
"Oh, you don't believe me? I could always show you the evidence."
She reached inside her handbag and pulled out her phone, tapping the keypad before showing it to me.
"W-what is that?" I stammered, my eyes zoning in on the flashing images on the screen.
"What do you think it is?" She taunted me maliciously, watching my horrified expression in delight.
A video was playing on her phone right in front of me but the image was grainy and not the highest quality. Despite this I could still make out what it was and it turned my stomach.
"That can't be real." I trembled, placing my hand on my chest in an attempt to slow down my breathing. "It can't be."
"What about the date in the corner? Can you see that?"
I glanced at the date, trying to calculate how far back it was in my head.
"Last week." I blurted out, closing my eyes as though I could wake myself up from this nightmare.
"It happened last Thursday." She clarified spitefully, enjoying every moment of my discomfort.
As much as I didn't want to, I couldn't resist grabbing the phone out of her hand. My eyes widened when they saw Chase once again. He was shirtless and glistening with sweat while Louise was beneath him. Her legs were wrapped around him and I wanted to throw up.
They were fucking each other on a desk which looked like they were in some kind of office. I couldn't stop myself from staring at the footage as my tears began to flow and my vision turned cloudy.
"This isn't real." I cried, shaking my head vehemently.
"You can see it for yourself!" She exclaimed loudly, snatching her phone back.
"This isn't happening..." I murmured quietly, pacing back and forth in complete denial. "This isn't real."
"Can you have your meltdown after I've left? I just thought you should know what Chase gets up to when you're not around."
She grinned victoriously before making her exit, blowing me a kiss as she made her way to the front door.
"Wait a second!" I yelled after her, fury and rage taking over my entire body. "Why even tell me in the first place? Why show me this?"
She turned around slowly, narrowing her eyes at me in contempt as she looked me up and down once more.
"Because I told you a really long time ago that I'd get him one day and now I have. I won."
"So you did all of this just to hurt me?!" I murmured quietly, struggling to process that level of cruelty and hatred.
"I did it because Chase belongs with me. He always has and he always will." She fired back at me, breaking my heart into a thousand pieces.
"Chase never wanted you." I reminded her coldly. "That's why you hate me."
What I said is true. Louise was always the most popular girl in school and she could have had anyone. The only person she could never get was Chase. He barely showed any interest in her and his rejection drove her crazy. Especially when she found out he was pursuing me instead.
"He wanted me right here." She goaded me, waving her phone right in front of my face.
"I know it looks that way but I also know Chase. You had to have manipulated him into doing this!"
"Like what?" She challenged me, refusing to back down.
"Did... did you drug him?" I asked her, horrified that it might have actually happened.
"Of course I didn't. Does he look like he was drugged to you? He fucked me on that desk because he wanted to. He wanted me."
"Liar." I whispered, seething with fury. "I don't know what you're not telling me or what you're lying about but you're hiding something and I'm going to find out what it is."
I briefly caught a glimpse of fear in her eyes and knew there was more to it right there and then.
"All you need to know is that Chase and I had sex." She added hastily, somehow managing to compose herself.
The house was completely silent after she left and I could finally break down the way my body needed to. My legs gave way beneath me and I stayed there for hours; curled up in a ball in the middle of my hallway.
Alone in my heartache and without any answers.
My heart still needs to know everything that happened between them but I also know that it will take time. Uncovering the actual truth is not going to be easy.
Of course it doesn't really matter what Louise said to Chase or what she threatened him with to persuade him to have sex with her because he still did it. No matter what, he still chose to betray me and this time he has to pay for it.
He's torn my whole world apart just like he did before. He's shattered the future he once promised me and all the dreams he made me believe in and for that...
I'll have my revenge.
