Six years earlier...
My legs are actually shaking as I approach the school gates. It's beyond pathetic but I'm far too frightened to take another step.
Because of Chase.
School used to be ok. I didn't exactly enjoy it but I was never fearful of it like I am now. Everything changed at the beginning of this year. My final year and the one you're supposed to enjoy the most. The one where friendships become stronger and you forget about all the annoying things you've complained about throughout school and only remember the good times.
That's what I was hoping for when I returned after the summer break. I was ready to get on with my final year and I was looking forward to the future.
God, I was naive.
I pause for a moment, cringing at the obnoxiously loud bell from inside the school building. The sound carries across the car park and hits me like a slap in the face.
It's time.
I take a deep breath and pretty much make a run for it, my eyes darting back and forth in case he's lurking behind a corner, ready to pounce.
Of course there's not only Chase I have to worry about now as there's also Louise to contend with. She's always been a nasty piece of work and seems to be intent on making my life a living hell whenever she can.
She seems to take pleasure in making me miserable and I still don't understand why she's made me her particular target. It's not like I'm a threat to her or anything as she's the prettiest girl in school and the envy of everyone who meets her.
I've no idea why she torments me like she does but I've somehow decided to accept it. It makes me sound weak and pathetic but I've made peace with the fact that she has a problem with me. The best I can do is try and stay out of her way.
The person I did not expect to turn into a bully this year was Chase. It's like he left as one person and came back as someone else completely. His transformation was inexplicable to me and not just when it comes down to his physical appearance.
He's always been well liked by everyone but that was nothing compared to the reaction he received when he returned to school after the summer. Everything about him had flourished. His physique, his height, his chiseled features and his strength. He looked incredible. Every single girl would start drooling if he came down the corridor, whispering about how gorgeous he is.
He is breathtakingly handsome. He is the sexiest guy I've ever seen in my life but that doesn't change the fact that he's a bully. He's a nasty, spiteful and vindictive bully who hates me more than anything. He's why I'm so scared to come to school in the first place.
I've nearly made it to the main entrance... just a few more steps and I'll be inside. I breathe a sigh of relief as I reach for the door, just a few more seconds until I'm somewhat safe.
"Where do you think you're going?"
My legs almost give way beneath me as soon as I hear her voice. I knew it was too good to be true to have such a stress free morning. I knew someone would have to ruin it.
"Louise, I'm late." I blurt out hastily, noticing a group of her friends appear as they start circling me.
My one and only entrance is blocked before I have a chance to make my escape. Two girls barricade the door in front of me and I have no choice but to turn around and face my tormenter.
"Do you really think that anyone would miss you if you didn't show up at all?" She laughs, smirking triumphantly.
"Probably not but I still need to get by." I point out, desperate to find an exit.
"You've always thought you're so much better than us." Louise sneers menacingly, taking a couple steps closer towards me. "Better than me."
"I really don't." I reply truthfully. "I never have."
"You're the one who is completely irrelevant at this school. If you disappeared then no one would even care." She goads me, glaring down at me in disgust.
"Leave her alone." A commanding voice startles us both and I gasp when I spot Chase coming up behind Louise.
"Excuse me?" She asks, sounding incredulous.
"You heard." He replies darkly, glowering down at her in anger. "I said leave her alone."
"Why do you care about what I say to her?" She challenges him, her defiance dwindling by the second.
"Just do it." He growls menacingly, scowling down at her in contempt. "Now."
Louise and her group quickly disperse, whispering amongst themselves as they scatter in different directions. I watch Louise take one last look at me, her eyes glowering with even more hatred than before.
"What are you still doing here?" Chase barks at me, pushing me to the side so roughly that it hurts.
I'm left rubbing my sore shoulder, wondering what the hell just happened. Why on earth would he stop Louise from antagonising me when he hates me just as much as she does? It doesn't make any sense.
I don't have long to speculate, realising just how late I am as I hurry into school and run down the corridor. I guess I'll have to save that problem until later.
