I woke up, feeling like I had the strangest dream.

It was dark outside. How long was I sleeping for? And when did I actually fall asleep?

I got out of bed. I wandered around the coriddor, it felt like all the relatives had left.

It was too empty. Where was everyone?

I could hear some murmuring coming from Mr and Mrs Helstons' room. I tiptoed to the door which was a fraction of an inch open.

The murmurs turned to actual sentences and I could nearly make out who was saying what.

'How could we not have told her? We should have told her a long time ago!'

'Are you kidding? She was only a child.'

'But we should have told her.'

'I didn't expect it to happen so early for her! I thought we would have a few more years to! This is my fault.'

'Its not yours. Claude, you were the one that was supposed to be watching over her!'

'Don't blame it on me, you both should have told her when you had told me. Then we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place!'

'I agree, we shouldn't blame Claude. He still had trouble finding out too.'

The door opened slightly farther.

The three pair if eyes behind it glanced at me.

'Raven,' Mrs Helston said 'You're finally up.'

She reached out to touch my shoulder. I dodged.

'What were you all talking about?' I asked sturnly.

Pause.

'I'm asking you all a question,' I repeated 'what were you all talking about.'

Mr Helston sighed. 'We were talking about you, dear.'

Another pause.

'What am I? What is he?' I pointed at myself then Claude.

'You're nothing, dear, you're Raven Simmons, an ordinary girl,'

'DON'T LIE!' I shouted, I felt my teeth were sharp. I had never shouted at Mr or Mrs Helston.

'We can't tell you much, only that you are now Claude's responsibility.'

I saw Claude's eyes widen. 'What?!' He spat 'why mine?!'

'Because all of this is partly your fault,' his mother glared at him.

They had left the room and I followed them out.

'You'll have to leave now, Raven.' Mrs Helston said.

'But the holiday isn't finished.'

'I know. But we can't have you here.'

'Why not?'

No one was answering any of my questions. Mrs Helston had retrieved my suit case from my room and ushering me down stairs.

Mr Helston had handed both me and Claude our jackets.

'Take care of her,' Mrs Helston told Claude as she pushed us both out of the house.

Claude started to walk away, hands in his pockets.

'What the hell is happening?!' I yelled at him.

'I'll tell you when you shut up.' He muttered to me.

We walked down the dark street, leaving footprints on the snow.

'Where are we going?' I asked him.

'I told you that I'll tell you everything when you shut up.'

It was cold outside and my jacket didn't seem thick enough.

We were walking to the train station.

When we arrived, we saw a handful of people in reindeer onzees, laughing and talking. They wished us a merry Christmas and we sheepishly wished them back.

We got onto the train which was completely empty. Not even the reindeer people had gotten aboard. I sat down on a seat and Claude sat next to me.

The train began to move.

'What are we?' I finally asked Claude. 'You have to tell me now.'

Claude sighed 'Fine, I'll tell you. First thing, we aren't humans.'

'Yeah, I can tell.'

'Second thing, we aren't animals.

'Obviously.' I said. 'So what are we, like, vampires?'

Claude scoffed 'No! God, NO! We aren't vampires!'

'Then what the hell are we, aliens or something?!'

'In some cases we might be. But no, we aren't aliens. The humans prefer to call us...'

I looked at him impatiently.

His head kind of dropped down '...demons.' He croaked.

I was speechless.

'I know, its a disgusting name. But creatures like us have to live by it.'

'I-I'm not a demon,' I said staring at my hands.

This was the truth. This was what I was. A demon.

'Who else..?' I asked.

'My entire family,' Claude replied.

'What about mine?'

There was a silence.

'Yeah, yours too,'

I couldn't believe it. No one had told me. For 19 whole years I was darkened away from the truth.

'Did you know...what I was?' I asked him.

'Yeah,' he replied.

'Why didn't you tell me?'

'I wasn't allowed to.'

'Why am I... Why are we like this?'

'I don't know. Everyone says they were born like this.'

I didn't have the nerve to ask him anymore questions.

I felt so exhausted. But at the same time, it felt like a heavy weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

'Where are we going now?' I finally asked.

'Home,' Claude whispered back.

I rested my head on his shoulder feeling my eyes slowly shut closed.

I had fallen asleep again.
