3000 years ago, just after Mel had joined stigma.

Third person POV -

It had quickly become common knowledge that Meliodas, the heir of the demon kings throne, had betrayed his clan and joined stigma.
But the knowledge that was less common was why he had done that.
That it was because he had fallen utterly in love with the goddess Elizabeth, the only daughter of the supreme deity, which practically made her the princess of the goddesses. This uncommon knowledge would sometimes come back to stab them in the back, just as it did on this specific day...

Elizabeth and Meliodas had just been walking through a small human town that wasn't too far away from the stigma headquarters which was placed in the heart of the fairy king's forest. They had thought it'd be a nice outing to a small village. No problems right?
Wrong.

"Why is she touching that thing?"
"She should get away from that monster"
"What a horrible sight..."
"I can't believe she'd even associate with him!" Was just some if the whispers Meliodas heard all too clearly as they walked through the town looking at stalls and boutiques.

Meliodas didn't like to leave himself vulnerable, especially not so shortly after shifting sides so he normally had his demon mark activated in his eyes and on his forehead, just as he had now, of course that made it much easier for civilians to recognize him as a high ranked demon.
Meliodas let his eyes glance at his hand that was intertwined with Elizabeth's.
He didn't like that she was getting a bad reputation for not only being seen with him also holding his hand and proudly displaying that they were indeed a couple, so slowly he moved his hand away from hers and put it in his pocket, immediately looking away as he could feel Elizabeth turning her head to shoot him a questioning gaze.

"Meliodas?" She questioned quietly thinking he'd quickly give her a small explanation like "my hand felt a bit clammy". She would've accepted that and simply moved on, but now, even after having asked, he still didn't turn to look at her, instead she saw him lifting his hand out if his pocket and placing it lightly on his forehead, grazing the demon mark that was placed there.
It was then that she began looking at the surrounding crowds and she saw the dirty looks she and Meliodas was getting, and now that she wasn't distracted he was also able to hear all the hateful comments.

"She should get away from him"
"Look at it. Disgusting"
"At least he finally let go of the poor girl!"
"Do you think we should do something?"

Elizabeth shook off the need to yell at the civilians spouting such hateful comments.
'They have no idea...no idea just how perfect Meliodas is...' Elizabeth thought lovingly as she stepped in front of Meliodas.
His gaze was still averted. Now gazing on the ground instead of to the side.
She slowly lifted her hand onto his cheek and put her thumb under his chin. She then slowly lifted his face up, forcing him to look at her, but instead of saying anything when their eyes met, blue abc black, she leaned in and kissed him on the forehead, smack in the center of his demon mark.
She did that in front of everyone, not caring one bit about what nonsense they spouted, for this reason Meliodas's eyes widened.
Elizabeth almost had to suppress a chuckle when she heard the beforehand murmuring crowds go silent, before then starting to murmur, this time more agitated.

"Is she crazy!"
"Does she not realize that that creature is a demon?!"
"I think I'm gonna throw up"

Then when Elizabeth pulled away from him she was met with wide eyes and a questioning gaze.
Instead of answering his silent question she merely smiled, took his hand and began walking out of town at a fast pace.
"Elizabeth?" Meliodas finally asked out loud. He didn't exactly know what to say, so he just said her name, hoping that she knew what he wanted to know.

"Don't listen to what they say Meliodas. I love you, all of you..." she finally answered and stopped walking to turn to look at him.
Meliodas's eyes continued to be wide for a few more moments before they finally softened.
Elizabeth had to admit that there was quite nothing like seeing those dark, normally cold, eyes soften to such an extent.

"I love you...so much, exactly for this reason...you're just so...so pure..so perfect" Meliodas said and gave a tug on the hand that was holding hers. It brought her closer to him, and Elizabeth knew what he wanted, so she leaned down till their lips met.
Meliodas never cared about the villagers hurtful comments. They could think bad of him all they wanted, he just didn't want them to think bad of Elizabeth.
But he was a fool for ever believing that Elizabeth thought the exact same thing, but instead, being directed at him.
They couldn't escape the judgement...but they didn't have to. They just needed each other.
