company picnic (jim and dwight)

jim's pov

today's the company picnic. i think it'll be a lot of fun! we're going to play softball, eat food and have a good time.

i get out of my car. the sun is burning and the air feels heavy. i look for other people of the scranton branch. oh there's dwight right there.
i can't find anybody else so i walk towards him.

"hey dwight!"i say
"what do you want idiot?"he says.
"what's wrong?"
"my boy- my girlfriend broke up with me"he says.

he looks sad, it's rare i get to see that side of him. a vulnerable and sad side. i also can't believe he still thinks i think he's straight. i mean, i already saw his boyfriend and he told me it was his roommate! i'm not that stupid.

"aw i'm sorry... i'm sure you'll meet someone else"i say.
he looks up to me and smile. it's a sad smile but still. god he looks cute like that.  nope jim! you can't say dwight is cute! i'm not gay! and even if i was... i don't like dwight!

we sit next to each other for a while, until pam come sit with us.
"hey pam!" i say.
"hey jim hey dwight"she says.

he doesn't respond.

"what's wrong with him?" she asks me.
"his boyfriend just broke up with him"i say
"no jim! my girlfriend broke up with me! i'm NOT gay"he says.
"okay sure, but you do realize that i've met him? and we never met any girlfriend?"i say to him.
"pfft shut up! you don't know what you're talking about..." he says.

me and pam continue chatting until more people arrive. soon, we'll go play softball.
of course, they put me on the team, but the thing is, i've never even played softball. i don't know i guess they assumed since i was good at basketball i was gonna be good at this too.

some guy gives me a mitt (you know the glove thing? idk if it's spelled like that but whatever)
and explain to me how to play. i think i get it?

we play a couple of match and i'm starting to get pretty good at it. we're winning by a couple points. if we win this game, we'll play against corporate. that would be cool!

we won! but now it's lunch time so we'll play against corporate later. i get some food and go sit with some other workers of dunder mifflin scranton. dwight is next to me. our knees won't stop brushing and his shoulder keep bumping into mine. usually i would tell him to stop, but i like the proximity between us right now...

we go back to where we left all of our softball stuff. i get my mitt and we go back to play. we play for a while, we are winning again!
i did something good i guess because dwight came to me and hugged me. i hugged him back but then we kinda both realized what we were doing and we stopped. it was very awkward...
i look at my hand, waiting. and i see...

A BIG ASS SPIDER!

i hate spiders! it's probably my worst phobia.
i take off my mitt and throw it on the ground. i screamed when i saw it so now everybody's looking at me.
"uh there was a spider..." i say.
"come on jim stop being a pussy! put back your mitt and come play."he says to me.
"no dwight i can't there's a spider on the mitt! there could be spider everywhere! can you get someone else to play?" i say.
"uh sure i'll ask ryan"he says.
"thanks" i say before going to sit on a bench further away.

okay maybe i overreacted... but i hate spider! and this one was giant! i'm sure it was poisonous... i don't know.

what i should figure out instead of thinking about spiders is dwight. why is today different? why do i find cute, the things that used to bother me? why is dwight so affectionate to me suddenly? is it because i said he had a boyfriend? or maybe it's because i didn't make a big deal of his boyfriend, well, rather ex-boyfriend.
