"roy we're over" pam said into the phone, though she wasn't talking to anybody as it was a voicemail.

unfortunately for pam, roy saw the voicemail way more quickly than she would've wanted. her phone rang and her heart practically stopped beating.

"pam what the fuck is that bullshit you're telling me" roy shouted into the phone and pam's eyes filled up with tears.

"i- i don't want to be with you anymore" pam whispered into the phone.

"what the fuck! are you seeing someone else?" he asked angrily.

"no roy i didn't cheat on you! i know you did though" pam said with spite. she was angry at him. angry for wasting all these years with him. angry that she was too weak to leave roy without knowing she could have someone else. angry that she was letting him talk to her like that.

"you know what pam? yeah. i did. you weren't enough, so i had to find someone else" roy said.

"i don't want to talk to you anymore. i'll come get my things tomorrow" pam said. she wasn't sad anymore, or angry. she didn't feel anything- except maybe a hint of hope that her future would be better than her past.

well, maybe there was also worry. if she wasn't enough for roy, would she be enough for jim?

***

jim ran back into the building. he wasn't crying anymore.

"jan!" jim said when he saw her talk to michael and his date- carole. "can i talk to you?" he asked.

"yes, please" she said, relieved she could get away from michael and carole. "so what's up?" she asked.

"i don't think i can move to stanford anymore" jim said and a smile crept its way on his face.

"why's that? i just saw pam, she looked sad, so i assumed you were actually leaving and you told her?" jan asked.

"yeah... it's because of pam if i'm staying" jim said.

"i thought you said you were leaving because of her" jan said. she recalled jim mentioning that during his interview. she had thought they had a fight, or something like that.

"i was, but i was wrong. she loves me too" jim said happily before he walked away. "can i call you later? i have something to do" he said before he walked out and she nodded uncertainly.

"i dumped roy" pam said as jim sat down next to her.

"what- now?" jim asked in shock.

"yeah i just did" pam said and jim hugged her happily. "turns out he was cheating on me" she whispered and he hugged her tighter.

"i'm sorry about it" jim said.

"he said... he said i wasn't enough for him" pam said sadly. "do you think i won't be enough for you?" pam asked worriedly as she pulled away from the hug.

"you're kidding? pam... you're everything, literally everything i have. i can't even imagine you not being enough" jim said, surprised she could even doubt it.

"... thank you" she said as she laid her head on his shoulder. "can i sleep at yours tonight? i don't really want to go back with roy"

"of course! i don't want you to go with that asshole ever again" jim said as he softly kissed her head. a gesture that may have been simple, but it meant everything to her. "also... i was wondering if i could take you out on a date, since... erm you know" jim said as they got up to walk to his car.

"i'd love to" pam whispered softly as she interlocked her fingers with his.

even if that night almost turned into their worst nightmare, it had ended well, and everybody was delighted about it.

except roy.

roy wasn't gonna let go that easy. pam was his, and he knew exactly who had stolen her from him.
