Caius Volturi could have sworn he almost jumped as the doors slammed open and then the sight of the people that entered very nearly set his undead heart racing-- A physical impossibility. Sulpicia and Athenodora Volturi were startlingly beautiful but as Caius stared at the woman he had been married to for the past two thousand years, he couldn't help but think that her beauty paled in comparison to that of Adolpha Blackwood. Just as he thought that; the werewolf turned to face the blonde who had entered the room with her icy smirk very firmly in place.
Aro was very visibly excited about what was about to take place as his wife approached him with a childish expression of joy that completely contradicted her icy personality. As the brunette finally reached the podium, Aro stood in bright greeting- Aware of how stony still Caius Volturi was as he watched his wife and his soulmate stood side-by-side, oblivious to who the other was.
"... Dinner?" Athenodora's voice questioned calmly as her rose coloured orbs assessed Adolpha with great curiosity and a scanning judgemental blinking that had Caius instantly on edge. As he watched, Adolpha switched her raised eyebrow at the blonde but there was something new in her eyes now; something he couldn't recognise as she switched her doe eyes from Caius to Athenodora.
"Not this one, Athena" Aro smiled brightly, flickering his gaze over to Caius who looked incredibly still as he pondered his next move; like a skilled chess player he watched them both calmly though internally his mind was swirling.
"Felix" Caius spoke so smoothly, voice a void as both the women before him had similar looks of curiosity on their faces, the very first and only thing he had found similar about them since arriving.
"Master?"
"Please escort Miss Blackwood to where she will be staying. As discussed earlier" he quipped, eyes pinned on Athenodora and she smiled back flirtatiously. Adolpha rose an eyebrow but was otherwise too busy staring at Caius to notice the expression that swam across Athenodora's face in that moment. If she had noticed... perhaps she could have saved herself a whole lot of heart break. But Adolpha was perhaps stupid; or later she would look back and believe that she had been because as Felix escorted her easily from the room, despite her curiosity— she saw nothing strange or peculiar in anything that had happened in the beautiful throne room.
But Adolpha Blackwood was playing a game now, one she hadn't noticed yet. She was playing chess, she was fighting for the dark king and the queen stood in the way. Pieces would fall and sadness would despair but as she was escorted away, all she desired was a decent sleep. It seemed to have been far too long since Adolpha had lay in a bed.
"Dora, please, return to your chambers. I shall join you shortly." Caius continued and Athenodora stared at him for a pregnant pause before she also turned on her heel and was gone.
"You too, my dear." Aro assured his wife who was currently perched on his lap with a frown though she listened to her husbands words; seeing the look of contemplation that ran across his features. "What are you doing Caius?" It was only when the door closed firmly shut that the blond king turned to address his brothers.
"Whatever do you mean?"
"I mean, you have your soulmate being escorted to your chambers as we speak yet your Seconds away from visiting your wife. Neither knows of the other and I am asking, Why?" Aro quipped, frowning deeply in curiosity.
"I didn't choose Adolpha. I do not want her here. I do not want her moronic wolf claim on me and I don't want her staying in my chambers. They are all things you have chosen. However, I have chosen Athenodora. My wife, unless you've forgotten." Caius retorted. "A wife whom I have not seen in three days so if you'll excuse me brothers..." he smirked as he pulled himself to stand and he soon vanished as quickly as all the others had. Aro blinked in shock.
"Why is he doing this?"
"Because" Marcus began. "Caius is trying to prove a point. He's trying to fight destiny by being strong. Our brother has hated werewolves for centuries, Adolpha hasn't changed that just yet. He will hurt her, and then he will feel bad about it."
"What makes you think Caius will mind? He doesn't seem to care what Adolpha thinks or feels?" Aro frowned.
"He certainly cares enough" Marcus acknowledged. "But he believes himself to be evil. He needs to at least run that opinion into the ground before he attempts to compose a new one. He wants us to believe that he doesn't care about Adolpha. But he does because as he sat there and compared them side-by-side; he must have realised that in the face of Adolpha, Athenodora paled in comparison,"
"They are both going to be angry when they find out."
"Oh he is absolutely counting on it. It makes it so much more interesting when the toys fight back. And he's piting the vampire queen against the wolf queen." Marcus hummed; the bonds he saw in his head being his own little slither of excitement in his otherwise dreary existence.
"Why?" Aro frowned.
"Because he's conflicted. Caius is currently comparing two thousand years of love and companionship with a soulmate bond that has been active for a day. He can't make the decision, so he's letting them do it for him. Caius is going to have them fight for him." Marcus explained.
"Adolpha is human, Marcus. And I promised her brother she would come to no harm."
"And she won't. This conflict won't last forever Aro. Caius' lust for Athenodora won't compare to his attraction to Adolpha. After the pain and guilt is aside, this is the thing that will drive them together."
