Betty's POV

Well, today's been a shit day. Me and Toni, my best friend, were going to ride our motorcycles together. We haven't been spending time together lately because of her girlfriend, Cheryl. Today was supposed to be our day, but of course, something came up with Cheryl.

Then, Sweetpea and Fangs, the "body guards" of the Whyte Wyrm, which is the name of the bar where the Southside Serpents hang out, got into trouble with some Ghoulies, our rival gang. So, yeah. Today's been great.

It's now about 5:00 pm, which again, is just great. I was supposed to hold a meeting at the Wyrm today at 3:00, we had to cover some business we had with the Ghoulies, but I got held up.

And by "held up" I mean I fell asleep and forgot to set an alarm.

I finally arrive back at the Wyrm and make my way through the doors. The whole bar falls silent, probably because they're assuming I'm mad. Which I am.

I look to the left of the bar to see if Toni finally came back, but no. She's still with Cheryl.

Cheryl is not just Toni's girlfriend, she's also my Northside cousin. In Riverdale, which is the town we live in, there are two sides divided by a railroad track. The Northside, and the Southside. And I'm pretty sure you've picked this up already, but we live on the Southside, which is seen as the no-good, worthless, junky part of town.

To be fair, there are gangs, and drugs on this side of town. But the Serpents never deal in hard drugs.

The bar's still silent, as if they're waiting for me to tell them something. I just roll my eyes and make my way up the stairs on the back wall of the Wyrm. The stairs lead to my office. Once I get to the door, I slam the door shut, which echoed throughout the whole bar, since the bar is still completely silent. Once I get in there, I slump on the chair that's behind my desk.

My office is nothing special. There's a desk, a chair, a laptop, and a couch. All of which are either old, used, or falling apart.

I have some homework I need to do, but I'll do it tomorrow.

I rest my elbows on my desk and put my head in my hands. "Mom, what would you have done?" I murmured to myself.

My mom was the Serpent Queen before me. The Serpent Queen is the person who runs the Serpents. If a guy runs the gang, he's the Serpent King. Get it? I became the leader of the Serpents when I was just 14, and I've been running it ever since.

Not a week after I became queen, my mom disappeared. I have no idea where she went, or where she is now. For all I know, she could be dead.

That was really hard for me, to go through that. I've lost a lot of people in my life.

My dad is in prison, he's the towns very own serial killer: the Black Hood. My mom is MIA. I have a sister, Polly, and she is in a cult called The Farm, which is actually an organ harvesting operation. I've tried to convince Polly that, but she's too brainwashed to realize. And I think I have a brother, my mom said when she was a teenager she had a baby boy, but she put him up for adoption.

The point is, the only family I really have left is the Serpents. They're not all that bad. I mean, sure, most of us here have either stabbed or been stabbed at least once. But once you get to know them, they're a bunch of softies... well, most of them.
