I know Mercy is off limits and I’m trying to respect that but for some reason inexplicable I can't stay away from her like a moth to a flame. After the parents are gone and Aya is upstairs we sit together on separate couches watching whatever is playing on tv, I feel her steal glances at me as I do the same with her. I am grateful when aunty Kate and Kyle walk in ending the awkwardness between us

“how are you kids?”

Aunty Kate asks

“Good thanks and how are you?”

I respond

“I’m ok, I should go and pack. Where are your parents?”

She asks

“They went out”

I say and she nods then excuses herself leaving me with Kyle and Mercy

“You ok? You seem a little out of place”

I say to Kyle and he sighs

“Kim has leukemia”

He says and I gasp in shock

“I’m sorry to hear that, and there's nothing they can do to treat it?”

I ask and he shakes his head no

“If they had found it early then maybe but it was already too late when they found it”

He explains, I don’t miss the sadness laced in his voice

“I’m sorry bro”

I say and he nods

“Sorry to hear that Kyle”

Mercy adds reminding us of her presence

“Hows your mom holding up?”

Mercy asks and he shrugs

“She’s hanging in there I guess. I’m going to have to go and visit them”

He says

“I feel so bad for having procrastinating to see them Yanga. I had all the time to see them and now one of them is dying. She’s been in and out of hospital”

He says with so much defeat, I wish I could comfort him but nothing I say could make him feel any better as he wallows in guilt.

“So this morning the weirdest thing happened”

He starts off and I look at him waiting

“Clark called me right? We work on cases every now and then. She kissed me and I froze”

He says and I laugh at him, the last relationship Kyle had it was the girl that made a move on him. He’s so fortunate that he doesn’t have to go through the whole being rejected thing because girls hit on him and if he likes them he agrees to see them but my big brother and his work are married

“Ouch!”

Mercy says

“I didn’t know what to do, it came unexpected bro”

He explains and we laugh at him

“She likes you and you couldn’t respond to a mere kiss, me I would stay away from you shame. Being rejected is painful”

Mercy says

“And you would know?”

I challenge and she shrugs her shoulders

“No but I know I wouldn’t recover if a nigga rejected me!”

She explains

“How do I make things right?”
