Getting word that my father was admitted hurt because all I could think of was Boobie and how she must have been holding up. My parents love their space, they love it when it's just the two of them such that getting them someone to live with them and take care of them was an issue on it's own. I can only imagine what would happen if dad died. Yaya and I just landed, the first thing we did was start home to shower and change then drive to the hospital.
“Melo hi”
Iyana says throwing herself in my arms, unlike Ase I don’t see her as much because she doesn’t like to travel abroad like Ase
“Hello sisi”
I say and then we break the hug for her to greet Yaya while I greet Ase
“Where are the kids?”
I ask Iya and she laughs
“Those people are not kids. Where are yours?”
She asks
“they are in school but Kyle and Yanga promised to come and visit, Aya, Miso and Mercy have school to focus on”
I explain and she nods
“how is he?”
Yaya asks and Ase sighs
“He’s not looking good hey, his doctor said he has fluid in his lungs if how we have no idea. They are running tests or so they say”
Ase explains annoyed
“And how’s mom?”
I ask
“She’s hopeful”
Iyana says, I let out a sigh and Yaya takes my hand into hers
“Can we see him?”
I ask
“Not at the moment. Apparently we need to wait for visiting hours first”
Ase says still annoyed
“So we wait. Where’s Boobie?”
I ask her
“she’s with her husband”
Iyana says and I nod
“And where’s your husband?”
I ask her, I know with Ase that James is in Joburg
“We in the process of getting a divorce actually”
Iya says
“What? Why?”
Yaya asks concerned
“He cheated on me with a 21 year old, he brought the child into our house on my fucking bed and sheets!”
Iyana responds not hiding her anger, Yaya touches Iya
“I am so sorry to hear that love”
She shrugs
“Shiit happens babe, how are you guys? How are things with Mercy?”
Iya asks
“She’s in school and she’s doing so well. I am so proud of her Iya”
Yaya says with the widest smile
“That’s good, she’s a good kid. You guys did a good job with her”
Iya says, she spent a bit of time with Mercy when she was here in South Africa that other year and she loved her.
“I can't just sit here and wait around you guys”
I say getting really impatient
“Patience was never your strongest suit my love”
Yaya says and I chuckle
“I need to see my parents babe”
I say and she nods. I walk up to the reception leaving them catching up ask for Nuni’s room and the receptionist is hesitant to answer me but after a lot of persuasion she finally tells me. I go back to my family and then we all go and see Nuni.
“What are you doing here Melo and Yaya”
Dad says with his eyes widened in shock, we walk over and hug him and then hug mom
“I can't believe you guys would fly all the way. I’m not dying!”
Nuni says and we laugh
“don’t be like that, you my father of cause I would fly to visit you”
I say and he rolls his eyes
“how are you dad? What are they saying is wrong with you?”
Yaya asks him and he shrugs
“Who knows? It's this old age Yaya”
He says
“Mah, how are you?”
I ask mom and she shrugs
“This man wants to send me into an early grave. Your father takes his health so lightly, do you know he wanted these kids to order him something sweet”
Boobie says and we all laugh
“The food they serve here has no taste Boobie”
Dad complains and we all laugh at him
“You won't be laughing like that when I’m no longer here. I’ve been telling your mother to prepare for my death”
Dad says
“You not funny Nuni”
Boobie says pouting
“You so adorable when you pout. All my years and I still never seen anyone prettier than you”
Dad says and mom blushes
“Bess stop it”
Mom says
“You blushing”
Iya says and we all laugh
“Boobie may I speak with the kids alone?”
Dad says and Boobie shoots him a look, he pleads and then Yaya offers to leave with her. As soon as they are out
“Dad”
Ase says
“Kids I’m really sick and the doctors can't really find what exactly is wrong with me. Last night they drained my lungs of water”
He explains
“And they don’t know what exactly could have caused that?”
I ask him and he shakes his head no
“They probably told me but I was probably too high on the drugs they constantly giving me. Twins, Iya. I want you guys to take care of your mother when I am gone”
He says
“I am trying so hard to hold on for her sake but it's like the more I hold one the harder things become. Holding on is prolonging my pain”
He says, he really looks like he’s in pain
“you are all she has as much as you children are all each other have. I want you to continue to look out for each other even when I am gone. I want you to take care of my beautiful wife, we all know how stubborn she is and how much she will fight you children to stay in that house but I want you guys to move her in with one of you guys for her sanity”
He says, I place my hand over his and Ase and Iya do the same
“You speaking as if you leaving”
Ase says and she smiles
“Not yet. Until you guys accept that I am going to die soon then I can't die in peace”
He says
“You not being fair dad”
Iya says
“Nothing is fair about life my baby. I know things are not well with your husband and I want you to think about your happiness more than everything else Iya. If divorce is what will make you happy then go ahead and do it my baby. Always choose your happiness and never place your happiness on anyone but yourself.”
Iya nods with teary eyes
“Ase I am proud of the woman you have become and continue to be. When I look at you I know I’ve done a great job because you have always chosen yourself while looking out for everyone else. There's nothing wrong with being your age and unmarried my baby and there will never be anything wrong with that. Continue to do you, what makes you happy ok?”
Ase smiles and nods
“Melo, you and Yaya have done a great job with your children. You have made your mistakes but above all you have learnt from them and for that I command you for it. I am proud of the man you have become son. I know you guys will struggle choosing who will take Boobie in but Melo you are the most stable between you and your sisters and I feel like Boobie would be happy with you and your children in the states instead of here. Please take care of my wife son”
