NOT EVEN A SINGLE SOUL stood there in the barren parking lot. Was I hearing voices now?
"Hey, see I can disappear even before you but it takes some of my energy," the voice continued to speak. My gaze fell on the ground in fright. There wasn't any shadows casted even.
"If this a joke, this isn't funny anymore," my voice wavered with hesitation as I spoke, tears prickling at the corners.
"Boo!" Suddenly, the Spirit came in front me, causing me to shriek in utter horror and lose my balance. Clasping my hands over to cover my eyes, I waited for the impact but it never came. Two hands went around my waist as they steadied me to balance before I could make contact with the ground.
I regained my balance but didn't wait to witness anymore bat-shit-crazy-witchcraft. Pushing hard against his chest, I sprinted past him.
"Hey! I didn't mean to scare you, please wait-" I didn't look back or listen to what he had to say. His voice became a distant concern as I kept running till the main crossroad came into view and staggered into the nearest taxi.
''Down by the Avenue street please,'' panting from all the running, I gave my address, still looking back through the window screen to make sure the guy wasn't following me. When the taxi drove around the corner, I rested my head against the headrest; just tired of the whole ordeal. The old leather smell lingered in the taxi which seemed quite worn out. The driver just drove around the neighborhood, speeding up where there were no CCTV cameras. I closed my eyes heaving out a sigh of relief.
"Do you believe me now?"
My eyes shot open as I saw the Spirit sitting beside me. There was no way he could have gotten inside the vehicle.
Unless he's a spirit.
"How in the world did you get in here?!" I still questioned.
"How many times do I have to tell you? I'm a Spirit, getting through objects is one of my specialties," he just calmly stated. More like explaining we were evolved from monkeys, not Adam and Eve.
"Just shut up already-" I growled at him, teeth clenched in frustration.
"Ma'am, is everything alright?" The driver asked from the front seat, eyeing me from the rear-view mirror.
"Can you please tell this man to get off the car?"
"Which man, ma'am?" The driver asked, baffled.
I glanced at the Spirit as he muttered, inspecting his nails innocently,
"See?"
"Look! He's even talking to me," I practically pleaded with the driver. He just looked over his shoulder in utter confusion proceeding to turn back around. Just when I thought he was parking, he took out his cell phone, snapped a picture still focusing on the road and showed the awaited result to me. I was ready to tell him 'Told you', but the words got stuck in my mouth as I stared at the image along with the Spirit. With my jaw probably on the seat.
In the picture, there was me sitting, my face clearly showing the signs of irritation but... there was no sight of the Spirit.
When I looked over, he was still there. Sitting with an impassive face, looking just as tired as me.
"Are you done?" He questioned rhetorically.
He was a spirit. Holy Mother Mary.
The rest of the ride was silent, with me contemplating what was happening around me and pinching myself to snap out of this daydream. I wouldn't be mad if the driver and the Spirit did exclaim, ''Surprise! You're in our reality show!''
But none of that happened. I paid the driver, getting off a few blocks away from my home and he casually drove away, obviously thinking I was high or something but had the hospitality to say 'take care' before he carried on.
I sighed and walked down the footpath, the Spirit tagging by my side. As moments passed, I heard him sigh before saying,
''I didn't mean to scare you earlier.'' I maintained the silence.
''You know, you're over-reacting. I mean I'm not that scary looking or-''
''Excuse me?'' I spoke up huffing, ''You better not tell this after you almost gave me a heart attack.''
''Hey, I didn't know how else to prove myself, ok?'' He said a bit annoyed, ''Try being in my shoe for a minute.''
''Yeah whatever,'' I muttered as we both stared off at opposite directions, not agreeing to make any eye contact. I halted in my action. The Spirit did too. Looking around, I saw we passed my house by two blocks. Coursing back, I gave Spirit a last look before marching up to the main door.
"Don't I get a name?'' Spirit yelled out from back.
''Why ask? We are not meeting again. Ever,'' I said shrugging off my shoulders.
I went along to turn the doorknob when the Spirit poofed in front of me. This guy had the audacity to do that again. ''Oh? And miss all the fun from scaring my latest and only conquest?'' I pretended hard to act unaffected, but deep down I was shitting myself.
''Tsk, now that I clearly know you're a stupid Spirit, I'm not scared,'' I said, masking a strong girl façade.
''Then why scared giving me your name?'' He asked, rubbing his chin knowingly, ''I know where you live, so... your name does hold little significance.''
"Rose," I said, defeated. If I had to give this Spirit a name, let it be one no one knows. Technically, it was my middle name that my father kept after his favorite flower, but even Aunt didn't know about it. She didn't care reading any of those stupid formalities and papers.
The Spirit smiled charmingly at me, showing his pearly teeth. I looked away feeling flustered for no good reason.
"Pretty name for a pretty girl," I scoffed at his response, but a blush found its way to my cheeks.
"If only you weren't a Spirit, I would have taken you as a creepy loner.''
''Ouch,'' the Spirit feigned a look of pain, placing his hands over his heart as he continued walking away. I smiled despite myself.
''What's yours?'' I asked.
"That's for the next time we meet. Till then, bye!" He waved before flicking his fingers, instantly disappearing into thin air.
I stood back staring off at the distance, pinching myself once again. I would be lying if I said I didn't have goosebumps.
How could I see a Spirit now?
