After we all left the mall I went home with Barry. As much as I wanted to spend the rest of the evening with Brent, I knew I had to check on Beau. It wouldn't be fair to make Barry care for him while I was out with my boyfriend. The ride home was nice as I enjoyed hearing Barry talk about how excited he was to start working.
We got home and Barry unlocked the front door. As he pushed it open, Beau sprang our and jumped on me.
"I missed you to buddy" I said as I hugged him. Barry laughed as he walked inside, giving me a moment to say hello to my boy.
"You're a good mom" he said.
"Ugh, don't call me his mom. It sounds weird" I said as Beau and I walked to the kitchen.
"Alright then" he said with a chuckle. I grabbed Beau's dry food and filled his bowl before placing it down for him to eat. Beau happily gobbled up his food as I watched.
"So what should we do for dinner?" Barry asked. "Looks like my parents are working late"
"Not sure" I said with a shrug. Barry went to his fridge and looked around for something to make. Once Beau finished eating I took him to the backyard.
After Beau relived himself in the lawn, I watched him run around the yard. He was so fun to watch as he bounced and ran, he was having so much fun. Feeling good about getting the job, I ran around with him, getting him to chase me and bark. He playfully jumped up and boxed me with his front paws, making me laugh.
"Jamie, dinners ready!" Barry called out, getting our attention. Beau barked and ran into the house as I followed him in.
Barry has made us a salad and gave me a plate full of it. I thanked him as we sat down together.
"So how serious are you and Brent?" Barry asked as we ate, surprising me.
"What are you jealous or something?" I asked.
"No! It's just most high school relationships don't mean anything, but you two seem like you genuinely care about each other" he explained.
"I guess so. I haven't really thought about it, I'm just enjoying my time with him, and I'm enjoying my friendship with all of you" I said quietly. Barry just nodded and changed the subject to school. I don't think he realized he gave me a lot to think about.
After dinner I helped Barry clean up in the kitchen. Once that was done we sat in the living room together and watched tv. Beau slept in my lap as we sat on the couch talking. It was nice staying with him, and I always made sure to let him and his parents know I was grateful. Once it got late we both said goodnight and headed to bed. Beau followed me to the bedroom and got in bed with me, cuddling up to my side as I fell asleep.
I woke up the next morning expecting a normal day. None of us were starting work yet, so we were likely just hanging out like usual after school. Beau excitedly waited for me by the door while I got dressed for the day.
"Alright bud" I said with a laugh as he began barking at me. I opened the door and watched him charge out and towards the backyard.
I let Beau outside and filled his food bowl while he was out there so it was ready when he came back in.
"Ready?" Barry asked as he grabbed his backpack.
"One minute" I said before walking to the bathroom. I knew my period was due so I wanted to be ready. I just hope his mom has something I can use.
I was surprised to see my period hasn't come yet. Maybe it was just late this month. I became scared once I realized Brent and I slept together a few times. I washed my hands and left the bathroom, trying not to act nervous. Beau was eating his breakfast as I walked past him and grabbed my backpack.
"Okay, now I'm ready" I said. Barry just smiled and we headed out. Now I really had a lot on my mind.
The car ride was pretty quiet as I was too nervous to talk. Hopefully Barry didn't pick up on that. He looked over at me a few times but said nothing. All I could think about was Brent, what could I even say to him? I didn't want to say something and find out I was wrong, but I also would feel bad not saying anything if I was right.
We got to school and met up with the others. Brent wasn't there yet so I waited for him while listening to the others talk.
"You're pretty quiet this morning Jamie" Eric pointed out.
"You okay?" Zach added.
"Yeah, I'm fine" I said as I kept my eyes on the parking lot. As soon as I saw Brent's truck, I rushed over to meet him.
Brent stepped out of his truck just as I got over to it.
"What's up J?" He asked with a smile. His smile quickly disappeared when he saw the look on my face.
"Can we talk?" I asked quietly. He looked scared and concerned, but he agreed. I took his hand and lead him to the side of the building, away from everyone.
"What's the matter J?" Brent asked as he leaned against the building, crossing his arms.
"Maybe I shouldn't say..." I mumbled. Brent walked over to me and grabbed my hands.
"You can't drag me over here just to say it's nothing. Now what's wrong?" He asked again, this time in a softer tone. I looked up at him and sighed.
"My period is late Brent" I said quietly. It took him a moment to realize what that could mean, then his eyes grew huge.
"You don't think..." he started.
"I don't know yet, but I'm scared" I said, trying not to cry. I expected him to get mad or run. Instead he pulled me into his arms and held me as I cried.
"We'll be okay Jamie" he said as he gently rocked me.
"No we won't Brent. Barry's parents will kick me out, I won't be able to work, and we're too young" I cried into his shoulder. I'm sure he didn't understand any of what I said.
"We're going to be okay, as long as we stick together" he said softly before kissing the top of my head.
"I don't want to be here" I whined
"Then let's leave. You shouldn't be here feeling this way anyway" he said calmly. He took my hand and walked me back to his truck, avoiding the others as we walked. I felt so lucky to have him in his life. Maybe he was right, maybe this wasn't the end
