Starry Night

I went to work the next day feeling depressed. School was long and painful, thought Brent helped me get through it. Now I was stuck at work with so much going through my mind. At least Beau was with me.

Eric came into the pet store, surprising me.
"Hey Eric" I said as I greeted him from behind the counter.
"Hey Jamie, how are you?" He asked before walking over the pet Beau.
"I'm alright, work is boring. What's up?" I asked, knowing he probably wanted something.
"We were talking about plans for Halloween. Since we're all too old to trick or treat, we might just hang out at Zach's house and watch movies. You in?" He asked. I quickly checked the work schedule before giving him an answer.
"Sounds good to me" I said.
"Awesome" he said. Eric hung around the shop a little longer before saying goodbye and leaving.

The rest of work felt long and slow. I fed the animals and helped a few customers, but other than that not much happened. After finally getting to close for the night, I grabbed Beau's leash and we headed out. I walked him around the outside of the mall, letting him sniff around and do his business. When we started towards the parking lot, I was surprised to see Brent.
"I thought Barry was picking me up" I told him as we walked towards him.
"I told him I wanted to pick you up" he said with a shrug. I just smiled and helped Beau into the truck before getting in myself.

Brent drove us to the park despite how dark it was getting. I trusted Beau to stay close so I took off his leash so he could run around. Brent helped me out of the truck and held my hand as we walked around. No one else was around as it was so late, so it was peaceful.
"You know, keeping this a secret is starting to get to me. I almost told Zach at school" Brent said softly while squeezing my hand.
"Yeah, I'm surprised I haven't slipped and told Barry. Maybe we can tell them next time we're all together" I said.
"So halloween?" Brent asked as he raised an eyebrow.
"Guess so. It can be our treat for them" I said with a giggle.
"They'll think it's a trick" Brent said, chuckling. We both laughed.

Brent lead me into the field as it got darker. He sat down in the grass and reached out to me. I sat down in his lap only for him to fall back, making me land on his chest. He laughed and wrapped his arms around me as we both looked up at the sky. The stars were beautiful tonight.
"Isn't it amazing?" Brent asked me.
"Yeah" I said softly, my eyes gazing up at the bright stars looking for constellations.
"Things are going to be okay Jamie" he told me. His tone made me think he was really reassuring himself.
"You really think so?" I asked, curious of his answer. There was a long pause.
"Yeah, I do" he finally said. I sighed and leaned my head back on his shoulder. I just have to trust he's right.

Brent had both his hands on my stomach as he held me close.
"When do you think you'll start showing?" He asked.
"I really don't want to think about it B" I mumbled.
"We're going to have to think about it eventually. Plan everything out, you know" he reminded me.
"I know, but right now I just want to focus on school. The baby won't be born until school's over anyway" I said.
"Okay then" was all he said. We both went quiet and just admired the stars as Brent held me close. I noticed Beau was laying close by, enjoying the nice night was well.

I didn't want the night to end. I felt as peace in Brent's arms, not worrying about anything in this moment. I suddenly heard Brent sigh loudly
"I should probably get you home before Barry worries" he mumbled.
"Yeah, he's been acting like a brother to me lately" I said as we both sat up.
"You moved in with him, him and his parents might see you as part of the family now" Brent said. He stood up and took my hand, helping me up. Beau sprung to his feet when he saw us get up.
"It would be nice having a good family" I mumbled. Brent took my hand and we began walking back to his truck.

"I never really got to know your parents. Were they always that strict?" He asked.
"I got along with them when I acted like a 'perfect' child in my youth. As I got older and started acting like myself, they started to push me away" I mumbled.
"I won't push our child away. I'll love him, or her, no matter what" he said as let go of my hand so he could put his arm around me.
"You'll be a good dad B" I told him.
"And you'll be a good mom" he said back to me. Hearing that made me tense. I was not ready to be a mom, but I guess I have nine months to get ready. Brent noticed me tense up so he pulled me into his side and kissed the top of my head.

We got to the truck and let Beau in before getting in ourselves. Knowing I was feeling tense, Brent turned on the radio to see if that would relax me. What actually made me feel better was hearing him sing along to each song. He has such a beautiful and calming voice. Beau fell asleep in the backseat while I was finally starting to relax.

We got to Barry's house and I was feeling better. I stepped out of Brent's truck and let Beau out, and he ran straight towards the house.
"Good night J" Brent said. I smiled and turned towards him, blowing him a kiss.
"Goodnight B" I said softly. He smiled back before I turned towards the house and walked inside with Beau. Brent really did give me a wonderful night.
