"Okay, it's 7:45. They said they to meet us at 7" Brent said as he checked his phone. I checked mine at well.
"They haven't said anything either" I pointed out. Brent stormed towards his truck.
"I can't believe they stood us up" he growled.
"Have they ever done this before?" I asked, following him.
"No" he snapped. I sped up to catch up to him and placed my hand on his arm. He stopped walking and turned to face me.
"No need to get mad. They must have their reason" I said calmly. "Besides, I showed up"
"Yeah, you're right. I just can't help but think they set this up" he mumbled.
"What do you... oh" I realized he meant the two of us alone together. His eyes softened as he looked at me.
"look, it's not that I don't want to hang out with you, it's just..."
"I get it B. It wasn't cool of them to set us up" I said. "So what should we do now?"
"Well, I don't want them to get what they want, but that doesn't mean we have to go home either. There's a cafe down the street, want to walk there?" He asked.
"Sounds good to me" I said.
Brent walked by my side as we made our way down the street to the cafe. He seemed to calm down as we walked.
"You know, I don't even think there's any good movies playing anyway" I said, breaking the silence. Brent chuckled.
"Yeah, it'd probably be a boring night" He added. We approached the cafe and Brent held the door open. I thanked him as I walked inside, him following close behind. We walked up towards the counter together and looked at the menu.
Brent ordered a small coffee and a blueberry muffin while I got a green tea. We sat together at a table next to the window.
"When I see them tomorrow I'm going to tell them off for this" Brent mumbled.
"Me too, but let's just enjoy our time now" I said. As mad as I was at then for ditching us, I didn't mind being alone with Brent. Brent looked up at me as he sipped his coffee.
"So... how are you liking our small town?" He asked.
"I'm really loving it here" I said. "Everywhere you guys take me is so nice"
"Yeah, I love it here. Can't wait to get out of here after high school though, I want to see the world" he said.
"Yeah, I'd love to see more of this world as well"
"Where are you from? Before moving here" Brent asked.
"I'm from Boston. Lot busier of a city, I'd rather live in this quiet town" I said after sipping my tea.
"I always wanted to visit Boston. And other cities as well"
We sat together talking about traveling until it got dark.
"We should probably start heading home" I said.
"Oh yeah" Brent said sadly.
"You okay?" I asked.
"Yeah" he looked at me and smiled, making me blush. Maybe he was finally having a good night. We threw our empty cups away and headed out the door together. I blushed again when I felt Brent grab my hand as we walked.
We got back to the theatre to see a group of kids our age leaving. One of them was Courtney, with her arm around the arm of a boy.
"See, it was a good thing we didn't go in" I said. Brent smiled and pulled me closer to his side as we walked.
"Oh, Brent and.... Jane?" Courtney called out to us.
"It's Jamie asshole!" I yelled, frustrated she wanted to ruin our night.
"Hey Courtney. Who's your friend?" Brent asked, trying to be friendly.
"This is Dylan" she said as she pulled him closer. "Did you two enjoy the movie?"
"We didn't actually watch the movie. We waited for the others and they never showed up" I said.
"Well sorry your night was ruined. We had a good night" she said. The two of them walked off laughing.
"That poor boy" Brent said. I giggled and leaned my head on his shoulder.
"I wish him the best of luck" I said as Brent wrapped an arm around my waist.
Brent walked me to my car.
"Thanks for spending time with me. I'm sorry your night was ruined" I said as I turned to face him. Brent shrugged as he put his arms around me.
"It wasn't ruined. I loved it" he said. I smiled and wrapped my arms around his neck, pushing back his black hair.
"I'm glad, cause I loved it too" I stared into his blue eyes and watched him lean in slowly. I leaned it as well and kissed him gently. The kiss deepened and we stayed that way until I had to pull away for a breath.
"Have a good night J" Brent whispered before pulling away from me.
"Good night Brent" I said softly, blushing like crazy. Brent chuckled and kissed my forehead before walking off towards him truck.
It was pretty late by the time I got home. I was surprised to see my parents not home, but also relieved. I got inside the house and fed Beau.
"Hey buddy, I had a great night" I said as he ate. "I'm sorry I couldn't bring you with me" Once he finished eating I brought him outside into the backyard. It was too dark out to walk him. Beau ran around the yard for a while as I watched, still thinking about that kiss with Brent. Something about I felt different from any other.
After about an hour I let Beau back in. We were both getting tired as it got later. I checked my phone and saw a text from Brent.
"So, was that a date? Did that count?" He asked. I smiled and wrote him back.
"Idk. Do you think it was a date?" I wrote. I waited for him to write back.
"I guess it was. Let's just not tell the others. I don't want them rubbing it in"
I laughed at what he wrote and told him I agreed. Beau had already fallen asleep on the couch.
"Night buddy" I whispered before walking up to my room and heading to bed. I wrote goodnight to Brent before putting my phone down for the night and getting sleep.
