Chapter 44: Xan

Xan coughed up blood.

My eyes widened. I looked at Amber and sent a message to her telepathically. Ambie! Get everyone! This is the last straw; no one hurts Xan. We're doing a revolution!

I started to call Amber Ambie starting a couple of years ago, and I shall do so for the rest of this flashback.

She understood, running to get them.

The bosses let her go, which I figured was part of their plan.

They looked at me and asked if I was ready to see their plan.

I scoffed, never believing that they would go with that absurd plan. That's when they started to chant a spell, and the Rook told me that it was a spell of binding.

I cried out for Xan, saying that I would do anything if they wouldn't hurt him.

They looked at me, saying, "Fine, you can be his substitute."

They finished chanting and pointed at me. I could feel a chain over my heart. They told me that I shall serve them until I die, even if they die first.

This seemed to get Xan upset. He kicked a boss in the shin.

But the boss noticed this. He called Xan a foolish boy, and pushed a few buttons on a box and threw it at me. I recognized it immediately; it was a bomb.
I couldn't move. Xan noticed this and ran in front of me, taking the bomb that was meant for me.

There was a loud boom, and he fell to the ground. I caught him before he went to the floor.

I looked at my brother and gasped. The entire right side of his face was gone, and his hands were torn apart. His chest was burned, and he was missing his left leg.

I was shaking. He painfully opened his left eye and said, "Zae, what if they were right about me being evil? After all, I control evil Rook, and sometimes they tell me of... horrible things that I should do. One time they stood that I should kill you."

I clenched my fists. "Xan, don't listen to them! Only a good person would protect their brother!"

He grabbed my shoulder. "Thanks Zae. Now I want to tell you this: no matter what others say, you're a good person for protecting me."

That's when he closed his eyes and died.

I stood there for a couple of seconds, then I screamed. I also subconsciously told the Rook to do a death spell, so when I came back to focus, I found all the bosses dead.

Then, all the people from outside came in, asking what happened, but at the same time, I heard the bosses ordering me to make them hate me.

And because I felt like I didn't have a choice, I did. I starting laughing, saying that I tricked them all, and that I was actually evil. I also threw a couple of insults in there just in case.

This sure got them angry. They starting scowling at me, saying how disgusted they thought of me and how they wanted to kill me one day.

That's when I raised my hands as if I was about to cast a spell. They left quickly then, vowing at return.

When they all left, I put my hands down, feeling satisfied on the outside but horrible on the inside. But that's when I noticed that Ambie was still here, looking at me.

She raised an eyebrow, and asked me why I was pretending to be evil. I laughed, trying to counteract what she was saying, but she asked if I thought she was stupid enough not to guess right.

I sighed, telling her about what happened and the deal I made. That's when she asked where Xan was.
For the first time in my life, I cried openly, and I did it on Ambie's shoulder. "Xan's gone Ambie," I sobbed.

The next years passed quickly. I married Ambie. I also took the bosses' place as my home.

The kids came back, fulfilling their promise. They stabbed a knife in my heart and left, saying that my reign of Evil was over.

Fortunately, the Rook saved me just in time.

I took servants in so that Ambie would have company.

One day, the bosses told me that I had to kill one of the twin children one of my servants had. That's when I told Ambie to take them far away from me and we'll figure something out later. I kissed her passionately, and she left.

She also left me our child we had together. I named him Alexander.

And that's when the Rook told me something that I liked. I was able to get Xan back.
