Harry stared angrily at his discouraging reflection, having developed a rather critical eye for himself it was difficult to look away from all the imperfections he found so visibly present on himself
There was his stubborn unruly hair, his lacking of height, his scrawniness ... and of course his overall awkwardness, which amazingly enough presented itself boldly in his simple reflection
He couldn't help but think he looked awful in his dress robes, they looked far too big for him even though they were sized perfectly, and he couldn't help but think that the fashionable style didn't suit him at all
He slid a hand through his thick dark hair, a feeble attempt to tame what simply couldn't be tamed
A low curse escaped him at the thought of whoever's idea it was to have a Yule Ball, how could they have possibly viewed it as something enjoyable?
He'd rather fight another dragon than attend this stupid waste of time, the expected humiliation that would follow him like a shadow throughout the entire night deterred him greatly
A burning heat rose into his cheeks at the simple thought of entering the Great Hall and spotting Cedric and Cho together, happy and carefree, together and in love ...
He had managed to steer clear of both of them for the past days which was a relief, though he knew there would be no escaping them tonight
He'd been walking on a slippery slope for the past few weeks, a rollercoaster of constant anger that plummeted unpredictably to a state of the utmost sadness that not even a delectable slice of treacle tart could cure
Since his awkward rejection by Cho he'd found it painful to think about seeing and think about talking to Cedric ... the indignity of it all was too much for Harry to handle
He supposed he should've guessed that Cho would go to the ball with Cedric, they were dating after all, as Harry knew all too well
He despised himself for feeling such sadness over something as pathetic as this. Growing up with the Dursleys had disciplined him into burying any and every feeling of sadness which would only serve to embarrass him, though since he'd discovered his fancying of Cedric what had been disciplined into him by the Dursley's seemed to have left him
Harry let out a huff of anger, he was convinced that the more he stressed the more his hair became out of control, as if mimicking his own tangled emotions
Having enough of his messy hair he quickly pulled out his trunk, too lazy to search through the mess and thinking he might as well put the recently perfected execution of the Summoning Charm to good use, he decided to retrieve the gel by magical means
"Accio gel" Harry muttered fumbling but catching the small container that popped out of his trunk
He walked back over to the mirror and cracked open the thick substance looking at it with a look of disgust, he'd never liked applying the gel to his hair but figured if it drew less attention to himself he would give it a go
He took a swipe of some of the gel and slicked his hair back, carefully making sure he didn't over do it
Though even after his hair was somewhat more tamed he found it equally as difficult to say he was happy with his appearance. A sad sigh escaped him, as he stared deeply into his reflection, a memory of another mirror he previously became obsessed with reappeared in his mind's eye
